dafont is your best bet for fonts. I normally google the title of the game name with "font" after it, you'll then find links on other graphics related forums/sites that way as well. Takes a bit of digging sometimes, newer games are harder. Sometimes I've free-handed the font, in the case of LBP for example.
GIMP is a free source image editor. I know quite a few people use it around here and produce great images.

For fonts like the Battlefield 3 one, it takes some manipulation (which is fun). For Dead Nation it looks completely customized. What I'd recommend is you pick a font that looks similar, rasterize it and then just do some paintbrush work.
