control help!

Silly question but how do you move to left or right when on a giant boss? For example I'm on the war beast fight and I have to damage his shoulders otherwise he replenishes his health, but I cant remember how to move left or right to do so. I try pressing in the direction, nothing. I try pressing direction and tapping x and Thor jumps off!
