With the impending arrival of my new TV do i need to buy the official PS3 HDMI cable or will any old cable do the same job?

Unless you're putting your PS3 50 feet away from the TV, your old cable will do the same job.

Am upgrading to HD from SD so dont have a cable atm but Sony's is about £20 and i can get a cheaper one from my local asda.

Whats the difference between a standard hdmi cable, an ethernet hdmi cable and a blu-ray hdmi cable?

Just get a cheap HDMI cable, no need for over priced name brands.

Ah my bad, I misread so I didn't know you're switching from SD to HD.

In that case, any standard HDMI cable will do just fine; even the dirt cheap ones. You'll really only have to worry about "brand name" HDMI cables if you're putting your PS3 quite a far distance off from your TV as that's when it'll affect your quality.

Any HDMI cable will do you if you have your PS3 near your TV, if you are using a long HDMI cable you are better to get a good quality cable, I was using a 10M cable as my TV was mounted over my fireplace and I had the cable run over the ceiling to my PS3 at the other side of the room and I would get interference(snowy picture) for 2-3 seconds every 5-10 minutes ended up moving the PS3 over to the TV and using a 2M cable and issue went away. So if you are only getting a 1-2M cable a cheap one from ASDA should be fine.

I got mine from ASDA for £7 around three years ago and it does the job perfectly. Haven't had a single problem with it.

Any old cable will do and I'd order it online. I paid around $7 compared to $45 in stores. Ridiculous.
