Here is how to by-pass this problem. Start the game and get to the screen that is telling you about the update required and it's asking you to press "OK". Do NOT press "OK" yet! Go near the PS3 and look at the yellow HD indicator light. It's most likely flashing. Wait for it to stop flashing completely and then press "OK". Hope this is understandable to read and good luck!

I had this problem, but I think it had to do with my change from fatty to slim, and the savegames i transfered. I encountered this kind of problem also with Pacific Rift as I started playing it again on the new console. I copied my files to a USB stick, then updated the games, then copied the savegames back to the hardrive and voila, no gameprogress lost.

I've had this happen with one or two other games as well. This method works for them all.
Basically what is happening is that even though you're in a menu asking you to update the game, the game itself is still loading up and running in the background. So if you press X to get the patch, the system will try to shut down the game while it is in the middle of loading, which is causing the system to crash. I realized this while waiting for the HDD indicator light to stop flashing, and shortly before it did, I heard the main menu music. I can't remember if I had this happen with a disc-based game, but definitely with at least one other PSN game. |

And here I was expecting this thread to be about how they changed the way custom soundtracks worked (I preferred the old in-game menu method myself).
This is good to know about waiting for the HDD light to go out. Since it apparently happens to other games has anyone posted this in the general tech questions forum?
