Knuckles ring problem

So I've been trying to do the knuckles ring trick with the electric shield and the hotel rings. I've done it several times and both times I finished a level after without getting hit. The summary at the end of the level shows me the huge amount I've collected from doing the trick but after the level is over the rings simply do not save. After the last time I did it, I replayed the level again with only a single ring to see if it would save and it wouldn't either! I've been playing Casinopolis stage after, maybe I should try a different stage? Any thoughts?

Problem: Casinopolis stage

Casinopolis does not save your rings in the end! It took several attempts but I started trying speed highway and once I finally completed it without getting hit it the rings saved fine. So let it be noted, Casinopolis DOES NOT save your rings.
