It's fairly easy to replicate without much frustration, although on occasion Eddie can do some weird things that will screw it up.
So in other words, if you're like me and don't want to "risk" putting in another save (although I'm sure it's just my paranoia acting up), just go take a look at his strat that he posted in his guide. If you picked up the Great Knife, then it's not much of a problem. However, I think I may have had a little more freedom in my save, I didn't actually get hit until the labyrinth (minus a few cockroach hits and the roof part). But I did get hit by the Abstract Daddy 4 times, and could have avoided a bit of damage by some of the normal enemies in the labyrinth/prison. So it really depends on how you're feeling about your total damage intake by the time you get to Eddie.
That's interesting about the rowing though Dedeurm, I've never heard of that. Yeah it's too bad you can't really manage it while rotating though.
Oh, and as for speed, you shouldn't really worry about it. At this point you should have been through the game about 6 or 7 times; you should know the areas nearly by heart. I would actually suggest going through a few times on beginner, not even picking up anything beyond what you naturally come across (i.e. don't get into rooms that don't have key items), because it's not necessary. You'll notice that it's somewhat intelligently designed; it almost has a pattern to it that you can kind of remember without much problems (as opposed to SH3 it seems). That way you'll have more practice about where the important items are. Once you start Hard, you'll need to be just slightly more thorough only if you feel you're really low on ammo. Again duck360's guide actually goes through decently well about what you should pick up.
The ammo accumulation is mostly getting a lot of handgun bullets so you can have a good enough stockpile to handle Flesh Lips, and then getting some shotgun bullets so you have enough to get your shooting kills (and you'll be picking up a lot of ammo on the streets while you're getting those kills anyway).
For anyone looking for a reference point, my first save was just over an hour of playtime; a 10 star ranking guide on gamefaqs indicates the author was about at 1 hour, 20 minutes at his first save. My second save I was at 2 hours, 13 minutes. Eddie -> end of the game should take you no more than 30 minutes if you know exactly where to go (I've done it in about 15).

Saving after the Eddie fight to practice the Boat Stage is totally safe as long as you make your save separate from the one you're using. It will be 3 saves at the Boat Launch, but you're only using this for practice. You will be reverting back to your save at the Cemetery (where your save count is 2) and go through killing Eddie, beating the Boat Stage and finishing the game. Like I said earlier, be mindful of your damage before the Eddie fight. Because of his weird fight pattern, Eddie can be kind of a pain to deal with. The above content I posted is just a strategy I posted for others to follow just to help out in some way to make it a bit easier. However, there was a fine print that was posted above:

You may find a better strategy for yourself, so keep in mind that you are free to do what's best for you in completing this tough run.
