Dead Space Series

I have been wondering if any of you dead space fans can tell me whether or not dead space 2 is worth playing since I've never picked up the first? Mainly from a story continuity point of view.
I don't want to be missing vital plot points but at the same time I'm wondering if the first is a bit dated to be picking up now?

If your a fan of old Resident Evil you should give DS1 a shot, its really cheap if your a fan of used games....DS2 is still a good deal b/c it comes with DS:Extraction

The only thing you will really miss out on if you skip DS1 is the feeling of total dread when you arrive at a certain area

Should be played with headphones at night in the dark for the best atmosphere
