Long time since I played it on ps3, but it was pretty dead on ps3 for 2 years ago. Like 10 servers running, toke long time to connect, so Im quessing its more dead now

I was very glad I played Portal before starting Portal 2.

It will help to get some backstory (as others said, some references will make more sense) but also teach you the mechanics from the ground up. It's short and it's fun!
