I'm looking for some advice...
I have just started playing through this game and have really been enjoying it because it is not your run of the mill FPS. I have found it straightforward playing on Normal difficulty, doing all the main and secondary objectives, until I reached the part where you have to defend the village at the end of mission 3. I just cannot get past this part. I've tried various different strategies that I've found on the web but the village always gets overrun and eventually there are too many enemies to fight off. So, firstly, I only have one of the armoured vehicles in the village. I have tried replaying the misson to get two vehicles for the fight but I can only manage to get one there. Do I basically need to have two amoured vehilces in order to beat this section? Secondly, if I do persist with this until I beat it, do the missions just keep getting harder the further you get into the game and will I just be letting myself in for more and more frustration? I hear you man, had the same problems. that part might be the most difficult challenge in the game. There are two fixed machine gun in the village, order two of your squad mates to operate them, they are surprisingly good at it. Take the last one as the machine gunner of armored vehicle. Mostly drive in the woods between two machine gun spots. If things go hectic in a point, park somewhere close, get out the car and help your mates. 2 fixed heavy machine guns (1 fixed, 1 on vehicle) and you (as a mobile human intelligence not stupid ai) is an adequate fire power. I don't remember exact coordinates, but after couple waves some bastards come from a point where fixed machine guns have no effect, take the vehicle to this point and get out of your car and use the same recipe. This was my main strategy which helped me pass the same level on hardcore difficulty. Good luck.

You only need 1 APC. Just make sure you don't get in it because the enemy is going to start firing RPGs at you thus destroying the APC, which you need.
The strategy I used was splitting the team into 2 and making sure I didn't get flanked. Also make good use of the machine guns. They will help tremendously. If my memory serves me correctly, I went all the way to the treelines to plant traps before the first wave of enemies showed up(I may be mistaking with another mission though). And remember, your teammates don't need to survive. Only you need to survive to beat the level. Good luck. As for the missions after this one, I think there are 2 more that will make you scratch your head. The very last one and I think 7 or 8. I can't remember the number of times I went like when I thought I had the perfect strategy and execution. The rest of the missions are easy(compared to 3 and the last one). And this is coming from someone that platinumed this game. Good luck and gods speed.

Thanks for the tips cantstandya and hshirako.
It turns out that the one armoured vehicle I do have is actually damaged and does not have any AI operating it. I've tried repairing it and leaving one of my squad manning the guns and this does help quite a lot, but I still do not beat the level. I think I'll try starting again and making sure there is AI in the vehicle so that I can use all my squad. Hopefully I'll be able to get two armoured vehicles to the final stage this time. Failing that, maybe I'll try leaving my squad manning the two fixed guns and see how far I get driving the amoured vehicle around just running the enemy down.

Persevere. That's my best advice. When I played this for the first time, I got so angry because I got stuck on that mission at least 20 times. I followed guides and whatnot but none of them worked.
Then, one time, I went mad and decided to run up and down the forest planting mines then just shooting like an insane maniac. I put my teammates on the MGs and they did fairly well. We still failed the mission though It turns out, the easiest way to finish this particular mission is to let the PLA overrun the village on the left side where the other squads/fireteams are defending the village. Place mines at your area towards the front and left as well as the front and right. Then, leave your team there to guard the area. Head out to the nearest building and snipe at the incoming PLA until the other squads get overrun. From then on, it's simply a battle of movement and wits. Move quickly around the area and take cover while firing at the PLA, they should be encroaching you from almost all sides except your back where the mines and your men will have taken out the PLA. Get two of your men to continue guarding the APC area just in case and get the other two to support you. Don't be afraid to use them as cannon fodder. That's one of the best uses that they provide. That was my strat for beating the mission but it might not work for you. All I can say is persevere and you'll get through it. |

Thanks for the all advice and encouragement to stick with it. In the end I decided to take a break, enjoy Xmas and only came back to it today.
I restarted the mission and made sure I had two APCs for the final defense of the village. Having two APCs made the last part a lot easier, I passed it first time. Basically, all I had to do was put one guy on the fixed machine gun, another defending the area near the two story building with the ammo crate and the third in the woods to make sure we didn't get flanked. I then simply alternated between helping out with not getting flanked and making sure the rocket launcher guys could not take out the APC on my side of the village. I think I only killed 3 or 4 enemies in for the whole final part, the most important thing is to make sure your APC does not get blown up so that it can kill the waves of enemies. |

One more thing that helped me is youtube. Not sure if they are still up but there some excellent videos that show you the quickest and efficient way to beat a certain level. Keep at it. You'll get the plat. |

Just finished off the plat today.
This is definately a game that you have to stick at it in order to get over the initial learning curve. It becomes easier the more you get used to using your squad correctly for the tactics you want to employ for a particular mission or situation. Hardcore is another matter though... Thanks again to everybody for the advice and encouragement. |

I would say Mission 3 and 11 were the ones I found most difficult. I played on Normal first and then Hardcore and I found that doing it that way helped in that I knew the layout of the missions the second time through and so I knew where to go and what to do. There is no reason not to just go straight for Hardcore though.
I was well and truely stuck on Mission 3 (hence the thread) but looking back the most important part to get right is actually the first 2/3 of the mission. You need to keep the APCs alive so that you have at least one but preferably two still alive when you defend the village. It becomes much much easier if you can do that, I literally only killed 3 or 4 enemies in the final part of the mission on both playthroughs because I had the APCs to kill most of the rest of them. If you are stuck then this guy's videos on youtube are pretty good: http://www.youtube.com/user/Gamreeth...0393ED9C72B203. Check out the Redux videos for Mission 3 at the end of the playlist. I used a similar strategy to the videos, having one guy on the mounted gun, one in the open area to the left of that gun and one in the wooded area to stop myself from getting flanked. I didn't bother with the Jeep though. I was also in the wooded area and alternated between suppressing the guys trying to flank me and suppressing the guys who appear from over the hill in front of the mounted gun. The most important part here is to kill or suppress the guys with the RPG who appear from over the hill so that they cannot take out the APC on your side of the village. I think there were three waves of enemies, four per wave with one RPG guy per wave. Good luck! |
