Stage 5 help!

I just finished lvl 4 on hardcore... took me like 2 days (Total of about 9 hours) to finally do it and thank god i did it!! i feel so proud about that, but now i face another problem...

Stage 5, the objective to destroy the onslaught carrier, Do i have to actually destroy it to move on in the game or can i just wait?? Its a lil hard to kill this guy on hardcore... Ships keep shooting out at very fast 5 second intervals and there are just so many attackin me.. I try to put mines and laser beam them while i shoot the carrier with my vulcan/disperser combo... this part seems very annoying and i cant seem to get past it... any suggestions?

nevermind i beat it... im almost done with 6 now... the dreadnaught carrier happened to hover over a human base which helped me destroy it. I dunno if it was my luck to come across that island and have him follow me there or if that was already his path. Well w/e i got support for my ground troops on this lvl!
