Voting Guidelines

  1. Do not vote unless you have played the game.
  2. Do not vote until you have dedicated a substantial amount of time towards the game.
  3. Do not vote based solely on the descriptions from the trophy list.
  4. A time consuming game does not necessarily mean a difficult game so vote accordingly.
    Examples;
    • Warhawk is time consuming and difficult.
    • Resistance 2 is time consuming, but not difficult.

Voted 4. Took me 96 hours to (P) the game (but I'm sure the time can be much lower than that since I tend to wander around a lot). The combat battles are hard at first, meaning you will have to level up a little from time to time and/or change the strategy for the battles. And now the game has also an easy mode that was made for whoever wants to just enjoy the story and not have much trouble with the battles, I didn't tried this mode so I don't know how easy it gets.

Some trophies require a lot of time, like getting 250 types of imajinns and alchemizing 120 different items. There is also 131 side-quests that you need to do to get all the licenses.

I would say that basic to intermediate knowledge of japanese is required to plat this game (the japanese version of course). Since the game is targeted for all ages there is furigana for all kanjis which helps a lot.

EDIT: after some time I would say I regret voting 4, it's more like a 2-3. I overrated the reasons to give a +1 in the difficulty (mainly the start difficulty that could scare off players not used with rpgs)

Voted 3. Basic strategy of 'hit things until you need healing, switch, heal, switch back and hit some more' works fine (plus some MP items for Maru, who loves to waste her entire MP bar in under a minute regardless of AI setting). Last boss was significantly harder than everything else in the game, but I beat it second try after gaining a couple levels, so I dunno.

At heart this game is just a lot of grinding, which is rather disappointing. I was not happy with needing 8 hours to farm 10 items at the end, either.

Plat at 77 hours.

Same here, downed the last boss the second time. Characters in the 80's level. MP and cure all items did the trick.

For better or worse, a classic JRPG. Familiar from beginning to end, wonderfully accessible, with a mildly punishing and non-manipulable lottery of rare item drops and monster capture that, when it's the only thing left to do in the game, can diminish your fondness for what came before but can also be overlooked in appreciation of the whole.

I enjoyed every mechanic of Ni no Kuni. It became tiresome during the final 10-hour grind, but there is no disputing that how the game plays is beautifully streamlined. Butter smooth.

Had I known what I know now, I would have saved quite a few things for the post-game to give me more to do and break up the monotony. That said, after the 10-hour grind I unlocked my last 4 gold trophies within an hour of each other. That felt good.

Playing the Japanese version I did not appreciate the nuance of the dialogue, but am ambivalent about fantasy writing in any case. In other forums I have promoted the game for its excellent gameplay and dismissed the generic, but not disagreeable, storyline. It's as conventional as convention gets: young hero is summoned to parallel world to defeat demon king (queen). To paraphrase myself from an early review: "I could not care less what happens to anyone, but I love being in their world."

If you have the time, if you love RPGs, you will love Ni no Kuni. If you are half interested, go for it. Let Ni no Kuni be your first experience. It's created for all ages and for all skill levels, by people who have expertly combined what works from 30 years of genre predecessors.

Difficulty: 3/10 :)

Fun factor: 8/10

Just got plat. Voting 3. Any problems you might come across is easily remedied by having a lot of phoenix feathers, or leveling up. Only problems I came across was trying to take on Solosseum S Rank while underleveled, which was easily fixed by taking it on around lvl 80s. I learned that the enemies' drops are listed in the bestiary as follows:

Most Common

Rarest

Rare

So if you guys are farming for certain items, keep this in mind. Also, don't listen to that guy who gives you the quest to find gustplumes from beachheads. Beachheads have gustplumes as their rarest drop, and it took over an hour to get one from them. Fight the Major Byrdes around the area, as they also drop the plumes and at a much more common rate too.

Dealing with the AI can be a pain sometimes, as they like to spam skills, sometimes canceling your own due to the animation that plays, and the fact that you can't choose to disable certain skills makes it worse. Most times during the story I ended up just doing the battle solo because they were so unreliable.

I'd recommend stockpiling on the harvestable items as soon as possible and make frequent use of Mugshot, to make the alchemy trophy go by much quicker. I had to go gather the following during my final hours

(Harvest)

Ring a Bell

Powerstone

Ritestone

Jade Marble

Slumberwort

(Steal)

Tealwood

Supple Leather

Seeds of Discord

Drakestone

Drill Screw

I also never found the need to use more than one familiar on each character, so the other 6 slots can be used to just level other familiars towards the 250 familiar trophy. Familiars level up fast postgame, so it isn't really as bad as it sounds. Getting enough Jumbo drops might be troublesome at first, but later on, you'll have so much money, with nothing to spend it on, I recommend just buying casino chips with your guilder and getting the Jumbo drops through there. I never had a low supply of regular evolution drops at any time.

Final time was around 75 hours.

Voting 3 as well. As greenzsaber said, make use of stealing and harvestin because the drop rates in this game are crap. Also worth noting that the only items I found stealable were the 1st and 3rd entries in the compendium, with the 3rd being the rare steal.

Also leveling the familiars you have through their evolutions is a hell of a lot faster than trying to capture them for the 250 trophy.

Got the plat yesterday. And I'm voting 4 for it. I think Greenzsaber's thoughts are exactly like mine.

I really suggest gathering materials early and stealing items at the latter part of the game asap. Another tip would be completing ALL errands first before attempting to get the 120 alchemy trophy. Some of the final errands would reward those rare materials giving you less farming for them. For the 250 familiars, it's not that hard. 250 seems intimidating at first but no, it isn't. I got to 261 before even plat-ing the game.

Total clock at 83 hours. Grind was ok since it's a really fun game. Best RPG I've played on the PS3 IMO.

I voted a 3. Most of the trophies are very straightforward, and the only small bumps in difficulty come during the last round of the Solosseum Series and like two of the final bounties. As long as you are building a solid core team throughout the whole game, everything will be fine.

That being said, definitely be ready for a grind as everyone said. I got the platinum with just under 77 hours played. Luck definitely plays a role in a lot of aspects of the game, especially with the familiar taming. Just be sure to always be leveling new familiars in addition to your core throughout the game and that will help grinding for the 250 familiars in the post game.

Awarded a 5. The difficulty spikes quite often without apparent reason - for example, the monsters in one region are far more difficult than the boss that waits at the end of it. Rank S in the Solosseum isn't a cake walk either and the stupid AI makes every battle more trouble than it should be.

Having said that, it's a great game and probably the best JRPG of this generation. Far less stupid grinding than in comparable games. Totally worth your time if you're into JRPGs :)

P.S.: Time to Platinum was 81 hours, although I did let the game sit idle for a few hours. Still on the shorter end of JRPG Platinums.

Just got the plat at 95 hours. The alchemy trophy was a total grind fest and made me start to resent the game towards the end. 4/10 for the amount of time it took to get this plat. I think I could have shortened my time if I paid more attention to where some of the alchemy ingredients were.
