ripping costumes

How do you get the L2 trigger to rip them off to come up? I've done a couple but they seemed to be random. I'm getting rather frustrated just seeing scare or kill as an option. Has anybody noticed any pattern to it? I can't progress any further until I rip some costumes.

Any help much appreciated.

Simply carry the bears into the woods (the areas where you hide from other bears)

The costume ripping option is present there.
