in your opinion have The Matrix movies transcended into the realm of Star Wars and other classic trilogys? My older friends, 35 and up, talk about the Matrix movies in a fashion that they are 'decent' and a good attempt at making something great but will never live up to the classics. My friends who are my age or a bit younger, 23-32, talk about the Matrixs as the classic movies of the most recent generations.
i personally love these movies and was inspired to ask people's opinions on the classic-ness of the Matrixs because of the thread about movies you can watch hundreds of times. I have watch the Matrixs sooo many times and probably will so many times more. It's common for my friends and I to marathon these movies at the drop of a hat. The same is for Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.....

Matrix was indeed something special but for me you cant rate any individual film, because it will fail as there are flaws in many of the CGI's, but only as a trilogy, As a trilogy in my eye's yes its up there with some of the great's story wise.
It makes each film pull together especially if you fully understand the "actual" story of the Matrix not just the graphics. The second film really is the lesser of the 3 film's, it's only saving grace is the fact it tie's number 1 and 3 together,

I really like the first Matrix movie, it's definetly up there as a landmark in filmmaking one way or another. However, the sequels were just horrible in my opinion. The story worked when it was confined to the first movie but what made it stand out the most was what it did with CGI. When they started expanding on the story to try to make it "grand" is when the whole thing just fell apart for me.
I can very well see myself watching The Matrix again. But I will just be pretending the sequels does not exist. Pretty much what I do with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies aswell.

I don't think they're the level of SW or LOTR in regards to the story. The first Matrix was great, but the sequels feel tacked on to me and I don't like where they went with the story.
However, I do think they rank up with those others in regards to production and special effects, they pioneered some new techniques with those movies. |

The Matrix trilogy could have been up there with Star Wars but they blew it with a poor ending to part 3 and one too many over long action sequences in both sequels. If they'd cut that final bit just before (or was it just after) the credits then it would have been a reasonable ending.

Odd that you posted this, I JUST watched 1080p versions of the trilogy a couple days ago.
I never listen to people who think the sequels sucked, Reloaded is my favorite of the trilogy...such amazing action scenes., this was the movie that really stepped it up a notch. But the main reason I watched these was because, I wanted to see if these movies could stand the test of time, in HD...considering it's been almost 10 years since Reloaded and Revolutions came out (2003). My verdict? Hell yes. The only thing that stood out was the wire work...like when Neo would kick Smith into a wall...he would slowly float to it, which made the fact that they were on wires very apparent...and it was something you just didn't notice in 2003. The Matrix Trilogy are some of the greatest movies of all time...they revolutionized the action genre. So many movies today still use special effects that are attributed to The Matrix. But I believe the Wachowski Brothers attributed alot of the fighting ideas to Dragonball Z (which you can see very clearly with Neo vs. Smith at the end of Revolutions). There were rumors floating around that Matrix 4 and 5 were in the works...I know most people wouldn't want them, but I sure do. I think they could do wonders with their technique on better technology.
