Providing you have finished the first 5 missions with a character, you can play the DLCs at anytime .

So okay, if I get the Borderlands DLC, can I start playing them on my existing gmae or would I have to start a new game?

Yes I am , I have multiple copies of the first 3 films though I only have the one copy of no4. I wanted the T4 Endo-skull edition but couldn't afford it, now it's like Gold Dust .
