How did you feel initially? Bit overwhelmed?

What I do like is the static abilities every pokemon has, but a lot of the other in game stuff is just bonkers. The beauty/talent/etc contests and all that other nonsense had me groaning. I also didn't like learning about how some pokemon will never be seen unless you can get yourself to a Nintendo center. That's my #1 turn off.

Call me old but everything past Poke Generation 2 just seemed excessively complicated, so my hats off to you on that. It's funny though because I still buy the games, even though I know I'll never complete them.
