argggggh 2nd boss battle B'alaam

i do the first part and get the bolt in his back but then Majin wont fire lightning. bar is empty. what have I missed? a fruit? this game is good but way too fiddly. i followed guide and havent missed anything? do i need to go get a blue fruit?

Attack his hand(s) when he falls (the bolt will glow red).
