Introduction

Journey is the third in a series of unique PS3-exclusive titles from ThatGameCompany, created and helmed by Jenova Chen. The first two games were Flow and Flower, and each introduced gameplay elements that tied the player’s emotions to the gaming experience without using an intricate and complex storyline, something rarely seen since the iconic titles Ico and Shadow of the Colossus from legendary game designer Fumito Ueda.

Personally, I played through the entire game about a dozen times within the first 48 hours of installing it. Without giving away any spoilers, Journey is by far the most emotionally invoking game I have played, especially when done with a companion who stays with you the entire journey. For me, it affirmed the profound joie de vivre that you can experience in a mutually beneficial relationship, but this is only my own interpretation. I highly recommend keeping an open mind and forming your own opinions and experience your own emotional path on your Journey!

One particular game element stands out from the overall experience: flight. Flying in Journey is joyous and fun, especially when done with a companion who helps recharge your energy while mid-flight. Entire levels are designed around the flight mechanic, and it is possible to fly for an unlimited length of time if you and your companion use calls near each other while in mid-air!

If you’re looking for a quick and easy 100% trophy title, Journey may fill your need, but you’ll be missing out on the whole game’s raison d'être. The “collectibles” referenced in Ancestors and Transcendence are easily found and are only a small part of the overall game.

For your Roadmap, I highly recommend first doing a full playthrough without using a walkthrough, guide, videos, or any sort of spoilers at all! Figuring out how to play the game and what to do with your companion is an enormous part of the experience. The game is short; veterans can run through all the levels in consecutive order in well under an hour. If you’re solely after trophies, go ahead and skip to Step #2. Otherwise, dim the lights, find a comfy place to sit, relax, and enjoy your Journey!

Road Map

Step 1: Normal playthrough (online)
Do one complete playthrough. Journey is a reasonably short game, and even if you decide to explore every nook and cranny your first time through, overall play time won’t last much more than 2 hours total. I highly recommend not bothering to look at trophies or guides for this step -- just relax and enjoy the experience!

At the end of this step, you should receive Rebirth, and will likely get Crossing as well if you waited at the summit for your companion before entering the light. If you’re lucky, you may also get Companion, if your companion joined your game at the Surfing level or earlier and stayed with you until the credits rolled. If not, don’t worry – you will do another complete playthrough in step #3 specifically aiming for this trophy. All travelers you meet during this playthrough will count toward the 10 needed for Wonder.

Step 2: Threshold trophy (offline)
This is where trophy hunters should start, and is a separate step because it is the only trophy I recommend getting offline without a companion. Please see the Threshold trophy description for details.

Step 3: Companion trophy and Collectibles (online)
For this step, you will want to conduct a complete playthrough of the game if you skipped step #1. This playthrough, you are aiming to keep a companion starting at the Bridge, Desert, or Surfing areas and play all the way through to the very end for the Companion trophy, but note that you can "boost" Companion later by only playing through the final 2 levels with another traveler. Try to time entering transitions to the next levels at the same time so you don’t desynchronize with your companion and potentially pick up a new one in the next level. Along the way, follow a video guide or my handy Collectibles Walkthrough below to locate every glyph and symbol for History and Transcendence, respectively.

Also keep an eye out for level-specific trophies, but note that in the Surfing level, you may not be able to get the third Symbol and the Adventure trophy (pass through 15 gates) in one playthrough, so save Adventure for the cleanup in Step #4 if you need to.

Step 4: Cleanup
Any other trophies you may be missing should be cleared in this step. Congratulations on your 100%!

Trophy Guide

Threshold
Cross the broken bridge without completely rebuilding it.

Spoiler! (click here to reveal)

Mirage
Find the hidden desert flower.

Spoiler! (click here to reveal)

Explore
Discover all cloth creatures in the desert.

Including the first cloth creature directly in front of where you spawn, there are 7 areas that have 1 or more creatures to release. In order as reached by following my Collectibles Walkthrough, they are:
Spoiler! (click here to reveal)

Adventure
Pass through 15 gates while surfing through the sunken city.

This is probably better done on a separate playthrough of the Surfing level. If you concentrate on only sliding through gates (the arches that are usually presented 3-in-a-row), you should easily get this trophy well before dropping into the pit at the end. On my second playthrough of the level, I passed through 17 gates without trying too hard.

If you have trouble reaching the number required for the trophy, in the second sliding section, try sticking to the right-side path for a few extra gates to slide through.

Trials
Sneak through the underground passage without tearing your scarf.

Ancestors
Find a mysterious creature hidden in the temple.

Spoiler! (click here to reveal)

History
Uncover all 10 ancient glyphs.

A glyph is a wall mural that shows a bit of the history presented in the meditation cutscenes. There are 10 “secret” glyphs spread throughout the game, and these are separate from the 5 glyphs that are needed to progress through the Temple level.

Upon completing the Journey for the first time, all gated portals will be open in the hub. When you enter a building and approach a portal, a picture of the level the portal leads to appears, and any glyphs you have collected will fill out the frame(s) to the left (and right) of the portal. If the frame remains empty, you need to collect that specific glyph in that level.

The number of “secret” glyphs to find in each level are:
Hub(1) – Bridge(1) – Desert(2) – Surfing(2) – Underground(1) – Temple(1) – Snow(2) – Flight

There are no glyphs to uncover in the Flight level.

For detailed information on where to get each glyph, refer to the Collectibles Walkthrough, below.

Crossing (ONLINE)
Reach the summit with a companion and return to the beginning.

Spoiler! (click here to reveal)

Rebirth
Finish the game and return to the beginning.

Cannot be missed; simply finish your Journey solo or with a companion, and you will receive this trophy at the “Companions Met” screen.

Companion (ONLINE)
Finish the game with the same partner for the majority of the journey and return to the beginning.

Try to pick up a companion at the Bridge, Desert, or Surfing level and stay with him/her until the very end of the game. If your companion remains the same from one of these levels to the end, you will receive this trophy at the “Companions Met” screen. Note that you must complete the game with the same companion – picking up a new companion in the Snow or Flight levels will invalidate this trophy. To help ensure that you remain synchronized with your companion, try to enter transitions to the next level at the same time.

If you have already completed a full playthrough and only want to get this trophy, you can start a new game in the Hub (you must select the option that discards the game in progress, if any), then take the teleport to the Snow level and wait for a traveler. Once linked, complete the Snow and Flight levels and enter the light together, and you will receive Companion at the "Companions Met" screen.

Glitch Warning: Do not sync or check your trophies during the credits! If you are looking at trophies or syncing when the game reaches the “Companions Met” screen, you will not receive trophies for completing the game, including Companion. You will have to complete another playthrough to get these trophies again.

Reflection (ONLINE)
Sit and meditate with another player for more than 20 seconds.

Press next to your companion to sit and meditate. Try to let your companion know that you’re aiming for this trophy first (and not just logging out) by pinging once or twice before sitting. Once both of you are meditating, wait 20 seconds and your trophy will pop.

Wonder (ONLINE)
Meet 10 or more unique travelers.

Journey keeps track of the total number of travelers you have met in your save file. It is possible to “boost” this trophy by entering a level from the hub, waiting for a traveler to appear, then exiting back to the hub by pressing and , and repeating the process. Once you have met at least 10 travelers, the trophy will pop immediately – there’s no need to complete the game.

Return
Start the journey again after a weeklong break.

After starting the game and at least reaching the hub, simply exit to the XMB, set your system clock forward by at least 7 days, and start Journey again. Press to begin a new game, and you will receive this trophy.

Transcendence
Collect all unique glowing symbols across one or more journeys.

There are 21 symbols to collect across your Journey. These are indicated by the glowing stones at the end of each level, between the statue and the meditation circle. If a stone is dark, you have missed that symbol and will need to return later to collect it. A symbol is a glowing rune that extends the amount of flight energy stored in your scarf when you pick it up.

In the hub, there is a portal that is not surrounded by a building. In front of this portal are rows of stones that also indicate which symbols you have collected. When facing the portal from these stones, in order from top-left to top-right, the rows correlate to these levels:
Hub(3) – Bridge(3) – Desert(4) – Surfing(3) – Underground(4) – Temple(4) – Snow – Flight

The rows of stones look like this:
Note that the two rows in the upper-right have no stones on them, meaning that there are no symbols to collect in the final two levels, Snow and Flight.

For detailed information on where to get each symbol, refer to the Collectibles Walkthrough, below.

Default Collectibles Walkthrough

Collectibles Walkthrough

This walkthrough will guide you to any Glyphs and Symbols you may have missed during your first playthrough(s). I will progress level-by-level and in a logical collection order that makes sense to me. Video clips are included to give you a general idea of how to get to a specific location. If you would prefer to view the walkthrough with YouTube previews instead of external links, please refer to the separate Collectibles Walkthrough thread instead, but note that 31 YouTube previews take up a lot of memory on your PC.

If you are after a specific glyph or symbol for a level, you may need to collect them all again, as my guide does not necessarily collect them in the order they appear in the hub. For example, the first symbol you pick up in the Hub (it gives you the scarf) is actually displayed as the third symbol stone for the level.

Tips

Companions: Try to stay near your companion, even if they appear to be lost or unable to navigate the world well. The benefits for this are twofold: both of your flight energy (the symbols on your scarf) recharge when you are directly next to each other, and you greatly reduce the risk of desynchronizing with your companion when traveling to the next level. This is important for the Companion trophy.

Calls: Use calls to signal to your companion. Holding and releasing it before the game automatically does it for you is a faster way to release a larger call sphere. Call spheres have important uses in Journey: they release cloth creatures and unfreeze cloth much faster than just running over them, they signal to your companion if they get too far away (your position shows up as a white bar along the edge of their screen), and if your sphere intersects with your companion, it recharges some of their flight energy! Two companions that stay close together can have unlimited flight just by periodically recharging each other with call spheres.

Hooking up with friends: It is possible to play Journey with a friend! If you enter a level such as Bridge at the exact same time, you are very likely be matched up with each other. This means if you can send a signal to time entering the level, such as through AIM or over the phone, the matchmaking server will recognize your entry at the same time and will try to match both of you to the same game. Make sure you’re with your friend first by setting up some sort of signal beforehand like “jump twice and ping once” or “ping twice and meditate”.

Take your time: Try not to get frustrated with your companion. Journey is an intrinsically short game intended to last no more than 2 hours, and there is so much to discover that patience is far more valuable than trying to rush through to the end. The game is about the Journey you take, and not so much about the destination!

Chapter Select: After completing your first Journey, you can return to the hub by starting a new game, or pressing , , then in-game. In the hub you will find a large pit with a central platform and several gates and portals around it. This is your Chapter Select! Here is a not-to-scale map of the general Hub area:
Glyphs: When you approach a portal in the hub, a picture floats above it showing the level it will transport you to, and the glyphs you’ve found in that level will appear in the empty frames on the left and right walls. If a frame remains empty, that means you have not picked up that glyph for the level. See the Collectibles Walkthrough for glyph and symbol locations.

Symbols: One portal in the hub does not have a gate leading to it and a building over it – this is a secret bonus for players who have picked up every symbol in the game.
The bonus is:
Spoiler! (click here to reveal)

Next to this lone portal are rows of stones set in the ground. They represent the symbols you have picked up in each level. When facing the portal from these stones, the levels the rows represent in order from top-left to top-right are:
Hub – Bridge – Desert – Surfing – Underground – Temple – Snow – Flight

The rows of stones look like this:
If you are missing any symbols or glyphs, use these techniques to discover which you need, then revisit those levels to clean them up. There are no symbols to pick up in the Snow and Flight levels, and no Glyphs to reveal in the Flight level.

As detailed in this topic, Companion can be earned by starting from Snow and sticking with the same person you meet there until the end of Flight. I just did that earlier, and it's a LOT less potentially frustrating than starting from the beginning.

Thanks for the info, but I'll have to verify it as the trophy itself is glitched in several ways, not just the way I detailed it. A few people (including myself) have completed the game from start to finish with the same companion and not gotten it, while others such as yourself have gotten it just by replaying the last 2 levels. Judging by the results so far, it may be tied in directly with when or if your companion would have gotten the trophy.

EDIT: Verified & added. Thanks!
