So, what was that part in the trailer about?

I remember seeing a trailer, where there was discs being used, and Alex the Kidd popped up. Can someone tell me what that was now? It isn't like a feature that Monster rancher had, using other video game discs, is it? I am pretty curious still about it.

You can summon up Sega Genesis characters for special attacks.

This video perfectly shows what I am talking about but also if you may notice, some summoned images don't look like any Sega game or any game for that matter because those are pics from this person's photo album stored on his PS3 HDD.
