I would say play the first one. Simply for the story. Other then that. You could just jump right into this one.

It's not much of a requirement to play the 1st game since you can mostly figure out what's going on in the game, but it does kind of give you a general idea and a better understanding on what to expect.
It would probably feel weird to play mk2 then the 1st game for gameplay since the 2nd game improves on the gameplay from the 1st. |

You can either play the original first then jump into mk2, or just start mk2 since I think it'd be pretty hard to play the first game otherwise. There are a few references to the first game but it's largely new and pretty playable without playing the first.

I've played both. If you want to know more about the story and get references in mk2, play the first one. But, if you'd rather just a play a better version, play mk2 first, then if you still want, play the first one. It's not one of those storylines where you MUST follow it in order, so people can play the second one without playing the first one.
