Introduction:

Heroes Over Europe is an arcade-style flight sim set during World War II. It is the successor to Heroes of the Pacific from last generation consoles, and similar to this generation’s Blazing Angels.

The story follows three pilots through four different campaigns. The story skips around between the campaigns, and missions unlock in a certain order, so you can’t play straight through each one separately during your first playthrough.

All of the plane unlocks and campaign difficulty trophies stack, so you can start the game on Ace if you want, but it is highly recommended that you play through the story on Pilot first. You’re also able to select the difficulty on a mission-by-mission basis.

Note: When playing through the campaigns make sure you don’t quit mid-mission. While the game does have checkpoints, your progress is NOT saved should you quit.

Step 1: Complete the campaigns on Pilot difficulty

Play through the campaigns on the Pilot (Normal) difficulty. This is your introductory playthrough, it’s all about becoming familiar with the controls and the individual missions. Most of the campaign trophies are either story-related or are ones you will unlock naturally by playing through the game. However, you may want to focus on Big Game Hunter during this playthrough, so you don't have to worry about it later. Also, be sure to complete the bonus objectives, you will absolutely have to complete these on Ace difficulty for Collector, and completing the bonus objectives on Pilot will give you more planes from which to choose on Ace.

Step 2: Complete the campaigns on Ace difficulty

Play through the campaigns on the Ace (Hard) difficulty. Now that you’ve completed the game on Pilot, you can play the missions in any order you like. This time you MUST complete the bonus objectives to avoid replaying the mission again. See Collector.

I suggest that you start this playthrough with the USAAF 352 FG Campaign for several reasons. First of all, since this campaign contains three of the last five missions in the game, they should be relatively fresh in your mind. Secondly, completing these missions with their bonus objectives is the most challenging aspect of the game; if you can do this, it’s almost all downhill from here. Lastly, the Me-262 A-2 Ace that you get for beating The Black Heart on Ace with the bonus objective complete is a very good plane to use on several of the other missions.

Step 3: Multiplayer [servers closed - Plat no longer obtainable]

Ubisoft shutdown the Heroes Over Europe servers without notice some time during Spring 2013. If you haven't gotten Super Ace & Ultimate Ace already, then the Heroes Over Europe platinum trophy is completely unobtainable.

The other multiplayer trophies are believed to be obtainable via LAN, so technically, they're still considered possible. However, several trophies are practically impossible because you will need a network of 5 PS3's for the following: Spectator, Fighter Ace, Support Chief, & The Oskar.

Red Baron should only require 2 PS3's, and Specialist can be earned solo via LAN.

Step 4: Clean Up

There shouldn’t be too much to do here. Hopefully, you completed all the bonus mission objectives during Step 2. If not, replay those missions on Ace. When that’s done, go back and get any stat-related or kill-related trophies you may have missed.

Ace is significantly more difficult than lower difficulties. Enemies are more aggressive and can take and deal a lot more damage. Your health does not regenerate at all.

To figure out which missions you've completed, Press :square: on the mission select screen to bring up the stats for the highlighted mission. On the mission stats screen, you can see the highest difficulty you've completed that mission and whether or not you've completed the bonus objective. Make sure you complete the bonus objectives on Ace, so you don't have to replay missions again. See Collector

General Campaign Tips

  • Controls: Use a relatively new controller over one that's been broken-in. This will significantly improve your Ace Kill aim. Choose the Pro control set, the Arcade setting is just awkward.
  • Checkpoints: If you have recently reached a checkpoint and are low on health, reload the checkpoint and your health will be raised to 50%. Make sure you actually see 'checkpoint reached' on the screen; just because you've completed an objective or watched a cutscene, that doesn't mean you've reached the checkpoint.
  • Change direction: Changing direction and altitude frequently will help you to avoid getting shot from behind. Don't chase one plane too long. This will waste time and leave objectives and yourself vulnerable to attack. If you're unable to get a good angle on a plane within a few seconds, change targets.
  • Warspeed: Use Warspeed to evade attacking enemies and reach objectives sooner.
  • Ace Kills: Chain Ace Kill to get multiple kills quickly. Hitting smaller targets such as the pilot, ammo boxes, or gunners will actually restore a portion of the Ace Kill meter. Pilot Ace Kills will take down any plane in one shot.
  • Energy Attacks: If you can master the energy attack and get several kills during a single dive, it will make objectives much more manageable.
  • Rockets: Rockets will destroy planes faster than guns, use them if you've got them. If you're about to crash into another plane and have rockets, fire them as fast as you can to destroy the enemy beforehand.
  • Avoid Tail Gunners: Flank these planes or attack from above instead of attacking from behind.
  • Target Squad Leaders: Destroying the squad leader first is said to reduce the squad's effectiveness.
  • Plan ahead: Some objectives may need to survive multiple checkpoints. You may beat one section, but if the objective took too much damage it will make further sections impossible.
  • Don't Quit: This will take patience, but it is beatable. Be prepared to spend several hours on one checkpoint. Remember, mission progress is not saved if you quit. Only quit if you need to change planes or an objective was previously damaged so much it's unable to survive further sections.

Unlock all plane upgrades.

There is a total of 40 planes to unlock by playing through the campaigns. Every mission, with the exception of London Burning and Operation Cerberus, has three different planes, one for each difficulty setting. London Burning and Operation Cerberus do not have planes to unlock on Ace. To unlock the Rookie level planes, you just need to beat each mission. However, to unlock planes on Pilot and Ace you must beat each mission AND complete the bonus objective.

The plane unlocks stack the same way as the difficulty trophies. Beating a mission on Pilot with the bonus objective complete, will unlock the Pilot and Rookie level planes. If you beat a mission on Pilot without completing the bonus objective, you will unlock the Rookie plane only. To unlock that Pilot level plane you can either replay the mission on the same difficulty, or you can unlock it later by fulfilling the requirements on Ace. If you fail to complete the bonus objective on Ace you will have to replay the mission until you do so. As soon as you fail a bonus objective, reload the checkpoint so you don’t have to replay any previously completed sections.

After you've completed a mission, any new planes you may have unlocked will be displayed on the screen. I recommend you copy the list below and cross planes off as you unlock them. Another way to figure out which planes you've unlocked is by comparing this list to the mission stats. Press :square: on the mission select screen to bring up the stats for the highlighted mission. On the mission stats screen, you can see the highest difficulty you've completed that mission and whether or not you've completed the bonus objective.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/18.jpg Ace Killer (B)

Ace Kill an enemy.

Story related, cannot be missed - You’ll get this trophy during mission 1, Phoney War.

Halfway through the mission you will have to complete a tutorial on performing Ace Kills.

  1. Close on your target until the Ace Kill reticule appears and locks.

  2. When in range, Ace Kill will charge automatically. The meter must be at least half full to enter Ace Kill. Press :l1: to activate.

  3. Target an enemy’s weak points. When the reticule turns yellow, press :r1: to fire.

While you’re in Ace Kill mode the weak points are presented as yellow. The weak points’ locations depend on the type of aircraft you are engaging. Locations include the pilot, fuel tank, engine(s), ammo boxes.

Note: Ace Kill will not charge while you are firing or taking damage.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/19.jpg Fireworks Display (B)

Perform an ammo box Ace Kill.

Close on an applicable plane and charge the Ace Kill meter. Initiate Ace Kill and aim for the ammo box on either of the wings.

Ammo box Ace Kills can be performed on the following planes:

  • Me 109 E-4
  • Me 109 G-6
  • Fw 190 F-8
  • Fw 190 A-8
  • Ju 87B Stuka

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/24.jpg The Sweetspot

Chain two Ace Kills in the 'Zone'.

Fully charge your Ace Kill meter to enter the 'Zone.' Being in the 'Zone' allows you to perform multiple Ace Kills without charging the meter each time. After entering the 'Zone,' Ace Kill your target, then proceed to Ace Kill another nearby enemy before the meter expires.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/23.jpg Vivisectionist (B)

Take out two engines and a gunner in one Ace Kill.

Kill an enemy gunner and destroy both of the plane's engines, during a single Ace Kill session. You can either kill the gunner first, then take out both engines OR you can hit the first engine, then the gunner, then the second engine. I find it easier to kill the gunner first because the fire from the engines often obscures your view of the gunner.

If you destroy both engines before the gunner, the plane will crash and you'll have to try again on another plane. Additionally, if you miss during the process or the meter expires you will have to attempt the trophy again. Fully charging Ace Kill will give you more time to hit all three targets.

This can be performed on any of the following planes:

  • Do 17z
  • Ju 88 A-4
  • Me 110 C-4
  • He 111 H-16
  • German B-17
  • He 219 Uhu

Note: In order to get this trophy on the B-17, you must destroy all four engines.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/30.jpg Pilot Hunter (B)

Pilot Ace Kill 10 enemies.

Shoot 10 enemy pilots while in Ace Kill mode. You just need 10 across all gameplay, and they can be performed on any plane type. This is easiest to do from the front or above. If you're chasing the enemy you will need to wait for him to ascend or bank to get a view of the pilot.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/29.jpg Ace of Spades (B)

Pilot Ace Kill an enemy boss.

This is similar to Pilot Hunter, but this time you must Pilot Ace Kill an enemy boss. The bosses are different than the squad leaders. There are only five bosses throughout the game. They can be identified by their objective markers, which feature a German Cross above two chevrons. Additionally, four of the Bosses are named aces with health meters. It can be difficult to charge Ace Kill on bosses, they are faster and change direction more frequently than other pilots. If you're having trouble with this trophy, try damaging the boss's planes to slow him down, or use another enemy plane to enter to the zone before targeting the boss.

Here are the five bosses and their locations:

  • Stolen Whirlwind Mk.II - Mission 6, Eagle Day

Note: You can get the trophy here, but If you Pilot Ace Kill the Whirlwind boss, you will fail the objective and have to reload the checkpoint.

  • Hans Werner (Me 109 E-4) - Mission 7, Empire's Heart

  • Ernst Jager (Fw 190 A-8) - Mission 10, The Butcher's Birds

  • Ernst Jager (Fw 190 F-8) - Mission 12, Eye of the Storm

  • Johann Sturm (Me 262 A2 Ace) - Mission 14, The Black Heart

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/25.jpg Big Game Hunter (S)

Ace Kill every enemy plane type.

There are 12 different planes to Ace Kill for this trophy. Planes are listed by order of appearance. The missions in which those planes appear are listed in chronological order. This list only conveys planes that appear as mission objectives and can be easily identified by pressing :cross:. After targeting a plane, the model will be displayed in the bottom right corner. Planes such as Me 109s, Me 110s, and FW 190s occasionally appear in additional missions as non-objective, supporting aircraft.

Unfortunately, there is no way to check your progress towards this trophy in-game. I recommend you copy the list below and cross planes off as you Ace Kill them.

Note: Bosses' Ace model planes are no different than their common counterparts in regards to this trophy. However, you may be required to Ace Kill them to complete bonus objectives or earn a different trophy.

  • Me 109 E-4: Phoney War
    • Defense of the Realm, Fighter Superiority, Firestorm, Eagle Day, Empire’s Heart, and Eye of the Storm

  • Do 17z: Defense of the Realm
    • Empire's Heart, and Party Crashers

  • Ju 88 A-4: Defense of the Realm

  • Me 110 C-4: Defense of the Realm
    • London Burning, Fighter Superiority, Firestorm, Empire's Heart, and Eye of the Storm

  • Ju 87B Stuka: Defense of the Realm

  • German B-17: The Butcher's Birds

  • Me 262 A2: Battle of the Bulge
    • The Black Heart

  • He 219 Uhu: The Black Heart

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/28.jpg Energy Attack (B)

Destroy a plane while diving at full speed.

Diving at full throttle from high above enemy planes allows you to inflict massive damage. Ascend as high as possible to give you more time to get up to speed and kill the enemy. Time your dive so that the enemy is almost directly under you when you're diving straight down. Watch for the speed line indicators around the reticule before firing. The speed lines will look like sun rays coming from your targeting reticule.

This is easier to do on lower difficulties. A good place to attempt this trophy is towards the beginning of mission 1, Phoney War where you have the slow moving group of Ju 88 A-4 bombers. Choosing a plane with machine guns may help as well, since machine guns don't overheat as quickly as cannons. If you're having a lot of trouble with this trophy, use a plane with an automated rear gunner such as the P-61 Black Widow.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/27.jpg Ramming Speed (B)

Destroy three bombers by ramming.

Destroy three bombers by crashing into them. Make sure to shoot larger bombers a few times to weaken them before ramming. A good place to earn this trophy is towards the beginning of mission 1, Phoney War where you have the slow moving group of Ju 88 A-4 bombers.

This trophy can be earned by ramming any combination of the following planes:

  • Ju 88 A-4
  • Do 17z
  • Me 110 C-4
  • He 111 H-16
  • German B-17

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/20.jpg Air to Air (B)

Destroy an enemy fighter with rockets.

Play through the campaigns until you unlock a plane with rockets. On the plane selection screen, press :square: to check a plane's specs to see if it's carrying rockets. Rockets are most accurate when fired at close range either directly in front of or behind an enemy. Once you're in range, press :l2: to fire rockets. If a plane has two different secondary weapons, you may need to toggle them with :square:.

This trophy can be earned by destroying any of the following planes:

  • Me 109 E-4
  • Me 109 G-6
  • Fw 190 F-8
  • Fw 190 A-8
  • Me 262 A2

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/22.jpg Bombardier (B)

Destroy a ground target with a bomb.

Play through the campaigns until you unlock a plane with bombs. On the plane selection screen, press :square: to check a plane's specs to see if it's carrying bombs. Fly towards a target until the reticule on the ground is over the target. Once you're in range, press :l2: to drop bombs. If a plane has two different secondary weapons, you may need to toggle them with :square:.

Can be earned at the same time as Dive! Dive! Dive!

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/21.jpg Dive! Dive! Dive! (B)

Dive bomb a ground target.

Play through the campaigns until you unlock a plane with bombs. On the plane selection screen, press :square: to check a plane's specs to see if it's carrying bombs. Gain altitude so that you're flying high above your target. Once the target is almost directly below you, dive straight down at full throttle. Line up the reticule with the target on the ground and press :l2: to drop bombs. If a plane has two different secondary weapons, you may need to toggle them with :square:.

A good place to get this is towards the beginning of mission 9, Party Crashers. You are required to disrupt the Tiergarten parade. The streets are literally lined with tanks here, so it's almost impossible to miss one.

Can be earned at the same time as Bombardier.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/32.jpg Death from Above (S)

Bomb an airborne enemy plane.

Play through the campaigns until you unlock a plane with bombs. On the plane selection screen, press :square: to check a plane's specs to see if it's carrying bombs. Fly low over an enemy plane and press :l2: to drop bombs. If a plane has two different secondary weapons, you may need to toggle them with :square:.

The best place to earn this trophy is towards the beginning of mission 9, Party Crashers. You are required to disrupt the Luftwaffe aerial display, which is essentially a parade of planes; however, none of these planes will attack you.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/34.jpg Tank Hunter (S)

Destroy 50 tanks using rockets in Battle of the Bulge.

This trophy must be earned during mission 13, Battle of the Bulge. There is an abundance of tanks during this level. Pick a plane with a lot of rockets, and as long as you refrain from getting kills with your machine guns/cannons, bombs, or flares you should get this trophy with no problems.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/31.jpg Sharp Shooter (S)

Complete a mission with 75% accuracy or higher.

After each mission, you’ll be presented with an after action report with a rating for accuracy. The accuracy stat indicates what percentage of your total machine gun/cannon rounds, rockets, and bombs actually hit their targets. Finish a mission with at least 3/4 of all weapon types fired hitting their targets.

The easiest place to get this trophy is mission 3, London Burning. You can literally beat this mission without killing anyone. Simply Ace Kill one Me 110, then fly around until the mission is over.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/26.jpg On The Edge (B)

Complete a mission with only 25% health remaining.

You will probably get this trophy naturally as you’re playing through the game. If not, play through a mission until you get to the final checkpoint. Now, purposely incur damage by letting enemies hit you, flying through trees, or scraping the ground. Your health bar is separated into four sections; lower your health until it is within the final quarter before finishing the mission.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/33.jpg Cautious (S)

Complete a mission with full health.

You may get this just by playing through the campaigns on Pilot difficulty, since your health regenerates to an extent. If not, start up a mission on Rookie and play through the level until you get to the last checkpoint. Don’t worry if you get damaged; on Rookie, you can reload a checkpoint and your health will be fully restored. Complete the mission without being damaged.

The best mission to get this trophy is mission 3, London Burning. You can literally beat this mission without killing anyone. Simply fly around, avoiding enemies, until the mission is over.

Multiplayer Trophies

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/37.jpg Specialist (B)

Play a full multiplayer round using each type of plane available in a level.

Servers are closed - Trophy is still achievable via LAN with just your own PS3

When creating a game, the host can choose from 7 different plane packs. The plane pack determines which 6 planes players can use during that match. To earn this trophy you must use all 6 planes available during the current match and then finish the game.

The easiest way to do this is to choose a plane and crash. After you crash, spawn in a different plane and crash again. Repeat until you’ve used all 6 planes. If you’re kill boosting just change planes whenever your partner kills you.

On the winning team without a kill in multiplayer with 5 or more players.

Servers are closed - Trophy is believed to be achievable via LAN with 5 PS3's total

Essentially, you have to be on the winning team in a game that has a total of 5 players or more, but you personally cannot kill anyone.

Create an unranked Team Survivor game for 5 players (3v2). If not everyone needs this trophy adjust the teams so the people needing the trophy are on the same team. When the match starts, have the losing team crash themselves. Every person on the winning team should have just earned Spectator.

See Fighter Ace and Support Chief.

Come first in a multiplayer game with five or more players flying a fighter.

Servers are closed - Trophy is believed to be achievable via LAN with 5 PS3's total

You must have 5 players and you must play the whole match in a 'fighter' plane. Fighter planes are indicated by an (F) on the plane selection screen.

I recommend boosting this at the same time as Spectator. Check whether you need Fighter Ace, Support Chief, or both. If you only need one of these trophies choose the type you need. If you need both repeat the Spectator boost process again.

See Spectator for the boosting method.

Come first in a multiplayer game with five or more players flying a fighter-bomber.

This is similar to Fighter Ace except you must use a 'fighter-bomber' type plane. You must have 5 players and you must play the whole match in a 'fighter-bomber.' Fighter-bombers are indicated by an (FB) on the plane selection screen.

I recommend boosting this at the same time as Spectator. Check whether you need Fighter Ace, Support Chief, or both. If you only need one of these trophies choose the type you need. If you need both repeat the Spectator boost process again.

Use rockets to destroy 5 enemies on a single life in multiplayer with 5 or more players.

Servers are closed - Trophy is believed to be achievable via LAN with 5 PS3's total

This trophy can be earned in either ranked or unranked matches. Either way, the game must have 5 players and you must get all 5 rocket kills without dying.

Shoot down five enemies with a single life in a multiplayer game.

Servers are closed - Trophy is believed to be achievable via LAN with 2 PS3's total

Similar to The Oskar, except you only need one other person in the game and the kills can be performed with machine guns/cannons, rockets, or both. This trophy can be earned in a ranked or unranked match, but you must get all five kills without dying. If you haven't already earned this trophy, you will earn it by fulfilling the requirements for The Oskar.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/36.jpg Super Ace (B)

Score 50 kills in ranked multiplayer games.

Servers are closed - Trophy is no longer achievable

See Ultimate Ace.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/231/42.jpg Ultimate Ace (S)

Score 250 kills in ranked multiplayer games.

Servers are closed - Trophy is no longer achievable

You can check your progress by choosing stats on the 'Ranked Matches Main Menu.' Press :square: to highlight your own stats. There are four sets of numbers under 'Total.' Your kills are represented in the column with the crosshair symbol. Press :l1:/:r1: to check your kills in each online mode. You need 250 kills total across all ranked modes.

For this trophy you only need one other player. You can occasionally find a legit ranked match to get kills. However, when you do it will be 1v1 against the top ranked players in the world, so you're better off boosting this as well.

Whether you're boosting 1v1 or with your group, the best mode to choose is Team Dogfight. Team Dogfight has fixed spawn points and a higher kill limit than Dogfight (Free for all), so you can get more kills per match. If you have more than 2 players just partner up and get kills at the same time. Follow your normal rotation it does not matter if the people killing are on the same team.

Note: If you quit the game, get disconnected, or the match ends prematurely your kills won't count. If you are kill boosting and it's your turn to die, make sure you are active in the game and are not on the XMB screen. You will not continue to spawn for your partner if you get shot down while the XMB or in-game menu are up.
