So I launched the NEAR app to find that APPARENTLY I'm someone in South Korea near Seoul... which is not even close. I have the Wifi only Vita and I didn't expect pinpoint accuracy but I at least expected it to get the right city. How the heck does it mess up not only the city, the province, the country AND the continent and throw me across the Pacific ocean. Kind of defeats the entire purpose of the app if I'm not even being seen in the right area.
Anyone else tried this out yet? And if you are wondering about my wifi only vita that's what came in the first edition bundle in canada due to Sony not having a 3G partner here. Last edited by XCrownedClownX; 02-15-2012 at 08:42 PM. |

I also have a WiFi only version, and it wasn't very accurate for me either, but at least it was within 1 km
Across the ocean seems a bit stretched. The router you connected to, has it been used in Seoul before?

Unfortunatly in Canada we didn't get the 3G. I still have 3.5 hours to wait for mine...then I'll see if it says I'm in the Brazilian rainforest or something. |

You'd think but even an IP isn't 100% accurate. For instance, if I plug my IP into an IP Tracer on the internet it puts me downtown when I'm in the east end of the city here. No. I did some digging and I guess it uses this 3rd party service called Skyhook which maps computers based on MAC addresses that are user submitted. Not as spot on as my iPod Touch but it was pretty close for me. First time the street over, second time a few houses down and then third time back to the street over. Was surprised that within seconds of starting Near it it picked up 9 people really close to me already. Guess we like the Vita in this district

NEAR says I do not exist, I am without form, in the void, the land of the lost...I do not exist, I think, therefore I am not.
![]() Not Brazil, not even South Korea...Im not even in this realm of existance apparently. Thats ok though, I'm prob the only person within 20 miles with one of these anyways...so no gift dropping or anything. Unless I went to the high school....might be some people there who got it...though then I might get the cops after me, thinking I'm some perv hanging out to oggle the school girls or something...some old guy walking around school grounds trying to get virtual presents...yeah right, Book 'em, Danno! Then I would be in jail, and I dont think they have free WiFi... so, yeah...I'll just use the stat tracking stuff for NEAR that shows the friends list updates and stuff. NEAR was never a selling point for me anyways lol. |
