Witcomb
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/6350/wheela.jpg *Update coming in a couple of months - I am currently concentrating on my studies and don't have the time to update this thread at the moment - January 2012* It's an exciting time for racing fans, the PS3 has a strong selection of racing games including GT5, F1 2010 and Dirt 3 to name but a few. These games offer a very fun and immersive experience, so why not build on that experience and get a wheel for your PS3? I started collecting specs of wheels for myself when looking to get one for GT5, I thought I should share it in case it helps anyone else. The aim of this guide is to compare various wheels available based on price, specs and internet reviews. The most important aspect of this is that i want the community to give me any feedback of the wheels they own. Did you find your wheel offered little resistance? Was it built poorly? Let me know either through a PM to me or post in this thread and i’ll include your experience. Also if you have a wheel not listed and think it’s worth including, again tell me about it along with where you got it from so i can check it out. Thanks to; - Hshirako - Catscan93 - Darth_Newdar - Steev08 - utopian8 - SL65 - gengar - iamQmai1 - RDT1 - SolidSnakeNZ - sandite5 - Augustus - NitroMayhem - DrSec - Livingguyanese *Tip from Darth_Newdar - Remember to check Ebay once you find a wheel you like. You may find a bargin!* Feel free to post any pictures of Wheels you own, this may help others decide on what wheel to get. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The guide itself is split into four sections; three for the wheels based on price and another for any accessories (steering wheel stands, seats etc). High End: These are the most expensive wheels widely available, they offer many features with an emphasis on offering a realistic experience. Mid Range: These wheels are good all-rounders, they may not offer as many options as the high end wheels but still provide everything you need. Budget: These are the cheapest wheels, they may not include certain features or peripherals (such as pedals/gear stick) but offer a low cost option to start racing using a wheel. Accessories: You may not have a coffee table to attach a wheel to, or a decent seat to use whilst racing. These accessories include folding stands, non slip pads for pedals and more comfortable racing seats. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Each comparison will include the following information; Summary: A brief description. Price: British Pounds/ US Dollars/ EURO Multi Platform: Can the wheel be used across multiple platforms e.g. windows as well as the PS3? Pedals: Just an accelerator and a brake? Or a clutch as well? Maybe even no pedals. Gears: What gear changing options are available? A gear stick, Flappy Paddles? Extras: Any extra specs the manufacturer gives. Internet Reviews: A summary of reviews based on those found on Amazon as well as any other sites listing the wheels. PS3T.org Member views: This is where member experience is shared. Drop me a line if you want to share any good or bad experience you’ve had. *certain wheels are only available in certain areas, such as just the US or the UK. This will be mentioned in the guide* ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Support for force feedback The following website lists what wheels support which games - http://www.steering-wheel-support.com/PS3/ Edited January 3, 2012 by Witcomb
Witcomb
High End Logitech G27 http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41B6rk1GenL._SS400_.jpg Summary: This high end wheel has bags of features as well as quality components ensuring performance and reliability. Price: £249.00, $243.28, EUR 374.37 Multi Platform: YES (PC) Pedals: Accelerator/ Brake/ Clutch. (Adjustable pedals.) Gears: Six speed gear shifter/Paddles on wheel. Internet Reviews: Amazon 4.5/5 Tech Radar 4/5 Wired 7/10 PS3T.org Member views: Hshirako: “I would definitely recommend the G27. A marvellous purchase if you ask me.” The steering is light, the gear stick feels realistic when in gear and the pedals have a realistic weight to them as you would find in a real car. gengar: "My friend has the Driving Force GT and I have played on it so I can actually give a comparison. The G27 force feedback is far superior to that of the DFGT; it's heavier and more accurate. The pedals on the G27 also have a much heavier feel - especially the brake pedal, which is better for more accurate touch. I also like having real paddles, which the DFGT does not have. That said, the G27 is by no means perfect. One negative is that, while I love the leather-ish feel of the G27 wheel, the stitching on the inside of the wheel tends to irritate my hands and I didn't seem to have the same problem when I tried out my friend's DFGT. Also, when there is very little feedback required in one direction, the G27 force feedback feels a bit "off" - I read that the G27 actually has two feedback motors, so my (untechnical and totally speculative) guess is that sometimes only one of the motors engages and makes the wheel feel a bit unbalanced." I can't wait for gran turismo 5.." iamQmai1: “very good wheel once you get used to it. Even though it doesn’t have proper paddles on the wheel, it has buttons on the back which in my opinion are just as good, and its even got a gearstick. It goes 900* (450 each way) and it’s very comfortable. It’s definitely worth the £80 I spent on it but be warned it takes a while to get used to it in my opinion. Overall it is worth the money but can be loud sometimes. If u can find a cheap one somewhere buy it ASAP. “ sandite5: "The only issues I have with the Driving Force GT is that the force feedback (FFB) motor gets weaker with each successive use. I personally LOVE FFB, so I originally had it on FFB setting 10 on GT5. Within 2 weeks I had completely burned out the FFB motor to the point where it wouldn't calibrate. Needless to say I had to take back the wheel for a replacement. I now use the DFGT wheel on FFB setting 5, but it is still slowly losing its strength the more I use it. I don't want to gripe too much because it's still a great, solid wheel. I just had high hopes for a FFB wheel that cost $129. I would give it a 3 out of 5 stars. " DrSec: "With its small size, too much plastics and too many buttons on the wheel, make the experience more toy like. Otherwise the DFGT does everything you want and more, quite well. I love the force feedback at its maximum setting. It does represent the best value for money as compared to the others." " SolidSnakeNZ "Very good value, good size, good Durability/Build Quality. Compatible with every PS3 driving game according to the box. so awesome games like motorstorm,WRC,F1 2010,GT5,Need For Speed and many more. The stand also folds down for easy storage which is a nice bonus. I don't know if the Deluxe is really necessary compared to the standard model, but I liked the idea of the wider, heavier stand and wanted to make sure it'd be stable." The Thrustmaster Ferrari GT F430 wireless Cockpit (funny name) looks really cool, but im going to see if my old school wheel works on GT5 before running out to buy another. hshirako
If you have the money, I would definitely recommend the G27. A marvelous purchase if you ask me. I only own the G25 but my friend owns the G27 and while they are very similar, the subtle differences are very nice. For example, while the G25 has a very loose shift stick where you do not get the feeling that its supposed to be a shift stick while the G27 has that, stuck feeling that sticks actually have(horrible expression I know, I suppose firm is the word). The steering wheel feels just a tad lighter than the G25 but there might not be any actual difference. The pedals might feel heavy for some people but its a realistic weight, unlike other cheaper pedals which have no weight to them. Aside from that, the G27 has some extra buttons but I never used them so I have no idea what they are for. Anyways, like I said, if you have the money, the G27 is the best on the market. G25 is also a very solid product too but I don't think they are being made any more. Also, I would have to say that only the hardcore players should purchase the G27. Unless you plan on playing GT5 or some other car game a whole lot, you are much better off buying a cheaper wheel.

Catscan93
Nice guide, but I don't know why you've put the Logitech driving force as US only...I bought mine from a UK retailer on Amazon.co.uk I love it personally. If you're looking for something sturdy, built well and that feels very comfortbale, the Driving Force offers a lot for a good price. The wheel itself is very solid and the force feedback feels fantastic, the pedals are well balanced and work well, and the buttons on it in general work well. The only gripe I have with it is that the table clamps only extend out enough to give you no more than 2-3 inches of space to attach it to a table, so it can't attach to thick-edged tables. Other than that it's a great compromise between quality and cost.

Darth_Newdar
Hi, if you're confused about the Logitech wheels, this is what I (eventually) worked out. Logitech had a "previous generation" of PS3 wheels, which were the Driving Force EX (low), the Driving Force Pro (mid), and the G25 (high). These all still work, and are all supported by most games. Logitech's "current generation" consists of the Driving Force Wireless (low), Driving Force GT (mid), and the G27 (high). It's worth noting that the Driving Force Wireless isn't officially supported by most games - although I imagine it would work. My review of the Driving Force EX (which you should add!): A great wheel if you don't want to spend too much. It has pedals, a good feeling wheel, and fairly good force feedback. No gearstick, but the paddle shifters work fine for me. While it isn't generally available new from retailers, there are lots sold on eBay for around £20, which is a great price for a wheel that would have cost at least twice that when it was originally released. And it's also officially supported by almost all racing games, which is a plus. Anybody looking for a cheap(er) wheel should check eBay - I picked up the Driving Force EX for just £20, which I consider a great bargain. Hope this helps! Thanks for that Darth, I'll update the thread later along with adding 'Dath_Newdar's top tip' to use Ebay. Darth_Newdar
Thank you, your seat is what inspired me to look for a wheel and make this , I was looking through my posts again to try to find yours to ask you if you had any feedback on your wheel. Thanks for that Darth, I'll update the thread later along with adding 'Dath_Newdar's top tip' to use Ebay. Thanks!

legndorock
Awesome job Witcomb. I've been thinking about getting a driving wheel for GT5 and this will really come in handy since I didn't know how to tell which ones were good and which ones weren't. I think Merc's and BMW's are like Veyrons in that the shifter simply selects Drive, neautral, etc with the paddles on the wheel for when you want to wrag it Awesome job Witcomb.
