Introduction:

(Official Description from the US Playstation website)

When the Empire begins its reign of destruction in a thirst for natural resources, it’s up to Max Brawley, a retired Gatling Gear pilot, to stop them. Together with his niece and his trusty Gatling Gear unit he must fight his way to the heart of the Empire and eliminate the destruction at its source.

Gatling Gears is a fun little game if you like dual stick shooters. There's a demo you can try if you want to see what it's like before buying. There are several different levels and multiple "areas" of each level to play through. The enemy types are fairly varied in their attacks and overall the game is pretty enjoyable. If you're looking for an easy 100% though, this is probably not the game. Most of the trophies are not too bad, but beating the game on Hard can be quite difficult in spots and it's required for the Veteran trophy.

Roadmap:

Depending on how good you are at dual stick shooters, you may be able to beat the campaign on hard without upgraded parts and skip a second playthrough, however, it is very difficult in my opinion and the path I'll be suggesting below requires two playthroughs of the campaign.

Step 1: Single Player Campaign on Easy

Play through the campaign on easy and collect enough gold bundles to unlock Take it to the Max. Also try to collect Green Peace, Thunder Struck, and Mine! Mine! Mine! while you're playing on easy. If you don't get them the first time through you can always get them via chapter select later. During this step, you'll also unlock the following story related trophies: Iron Man, Second in Command, and Back to Retirement.

Step 2: Chapter Select for Hard Cleanup

Using chapter select, complete each area of each chapter on Hard difficulty. This will get you the Veteran trophy. By doing this through chapter select, you will be able to use your fully upgraded walker, making Hard a bit more manageable.

Step 3: Survival Mode

Complete all three of the survival levels. You'll also need to complete a survival level without dying. I'd recommend just playing through all three arenas first as you may unlock Survival of the Fittest during the course of normal play. Survival mode is not too difficult on Easy. Completing all three arenas will unlock Gladiator.

Step 4: Co-op

At this point you should only have one trophy left, You Never Walk Alone. You can either try to find a partner in the boosting thread or follow the method in the trophy description to do it by yourself.

Gameplay Notes and Tips:

  • You can remove an upgrade at any time so feel free to experiment with different combinations for each level if you're having trouble.
  • While holding down :l1: to aim the grenades, you can also shoot rockets and they will hit the target area. This is a good way to aim rockets at targets which are farther away.
  • Rocket boosters give you unlimited ammo for a short time. You'll be able to continue firing even when it appears you're out of ammo. So when you do get a booster, feel free to spam rockets everywhere. Grenade boosters only give you two shots, but they do massive damage.
  • After each level you will gain xp points based on your score. These will unlock items in the Unlockables section of the Pirate Shop. Most of these are just visual changes (skins, etc), however the last one, the one in the center that costs 300xp to unlock, will upgrade your weapons some as well. You will probably not hit 300xp until a little ways into your second playthrough though. Anyway, keep this in mind if you are struggling with any trophies. Try them again later after you've unlocked the final suit. Weapons are more efficient with this suit. Grenades hit faster, gun spread is better, rockets move faster, etc. NOTE: Some people have noticed that this skin seems larger, so it may be harder to dodge bullets. Try out both to see which you like better.

Trophy Guide:

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/808/01.jpg Can't Touch This (G)

Complete an area in Katharsis without getting hit

In order to unlock this trophy, you'll need to complete an area of Chapter 5 without getting hit. That's right, you can't take any damage for the entire area. This is one of the harder trophies in the game. Just stick with it and keep practicing and you'll eventually get through.

I'll post the method I used in this spoiler:

[spoiler=canttouch]

From chapter select go to Katharsis->Terminal and select easy

  • First off, play all the way through the level a couple times to learn where all the enemies are.
  • In the very first section run forward and lob a couple bombs at the missile troops and the single tank. This should wipe them out.
  • Next, advance the screen forward VERY slowly until you can just barely see the bottom of the tank across the bridge. Notice the enemies don't fire back when they're that far away. Some enemies will and some won't, you'll learn which ones as you play. This technique helps on many sections of this level so keep it in mind. Anyway, bomb the purple ray shooting tank while it's barely visible on your screen. Then take out the troops in the same way. Inch forward a little more and destroy the walker. Notice it fires back at you even from very far away, so lob two bombs quickly in succession to kill it.
  • Continue to inch forward and kill troops at the edge of your screen. Destroy the first generator from as far back as possible and kill the troops that follow. One of the troops will drop an Invulnerability pickup. Grab it and run into the area and destroy all tanks and walkers while your invincible, but DO NOT destroy the second generator. After everything else is dead, then destroy the building next to the generator first. This will prevent the flamethrower troops from coming out. Now you're safe to destroy the generator and kill the flying enemies that follow.
  • For the next few sections just continue inching forward and blowing up things from afar. Try to blow up any buildings before generators, as destroying a generator will trigger extra troops. But not if the building is destroyed.
  • Once you get to the double bridges going north, blow everything up in the same way from the edge of the screen. One of the enemies will drop a grenade power up. DO NOT pick it up yet. Destroy the generators and clear all enemies on this platform, then pickup the grenade booster and move quickly across the bridge to the north.
  • This is the last area. Lob the powered up grenades at the northeast corner and then the large middle tower area with three cannons on it. Continue to dodge all the red bullets and destroy the shielded enemy in the northwest corner. This will trigger more cannons to fall from the sky and flying enemies will also enter. Wait till the last moment you feel safe and use the Spark Bomb. BOOOOM! You can breathe for a second now.
  • Now all you have to do is kill the final tank and dodge the moving red target that drops bombs. Throw all your bombs and missiles at the tank, and be sure to keep your gatling gun firing to destroy any incoming missiles that aren't red. After emptying all your missiles and bombs on the tank a couple times it will explode and the level will end. If the results screen shows Hits Taken is 0, then the trophy is yours. Congrats!

02.jpg  Back to Retirement (S)

Defeat Julius Steelwell and save the world by destroying The Butler

Story Related, cannot be missed.

Spoiler

This will unlock after completing the final area(The Butler) of chapter 5(Katharsis) in campaign mode.

03.jpg  Veteran (S)

Complete all areas on the hardest difficulty

For this trophy you will need to beat every area on Hard. This can be done through chapter select and all your upgrades will still be applied to the walker. On the bottom left of the chapter select screen you will see the highest difficulty you've beaten each area and overall chapter on. You need to have three stars for each chapter in order for this trophy to unlock.

On Hard, enemies do 4 times the damage they did on easy and you only have 1 extra life as opposed to the 3 on easy. Additionally, there is almost no period of invincibility after you get hit, so if several bullets hit you in a row, most if not all of them will do damage. Try to unlock the final skin in the Pirate Shop as quickly as possible. This will help a little bit when playing the levels on Hard. Be aware though, that hard is still very challenging as things can go bad quickly and there are no checkpoints. The boss battles especially, can prove difficult with only one life and increased enemy damage. Try to learn their attack patterns and save your spark bomb till the third phase when things get crazy.

One final warning, the fourth area of chapter 5 is a beast on Hard. It makes all the previous sections seem simple. Dodging all the waves of bullets will be the key due to the limited amount of damage you can take on Hard. The weapons simply don't do enough damage to kill large vehicles quickly before they start filling the screen with bullets. If you have 100% for Super Stardust HD or similar games, then you might not have much trouble, but for everyone else, just stick with it and keep practicing. If you can somehow make it past all the tanks, walkers, heavy troops, etc, all the way to the end of the level, save the spark bomb because 2 giant tanks show up at the very end and it will be nearly impossible to survive without it.

BigGordito said:
I'm currently playing through gatling gear on hard and noticed a little trick in 5-4 to make it just slightly easier. At the part where two tanks appear on the left and right, about halfway through. Right before the tanks come out, there's a small shielded tank on each side. If you only kill one of these tanks, only one giant tank will come, that way you can deal with them one at a time making it a hell of a lot easier.

04.jpg  Gladiator (S)

Clear all Survival mode arenas

This will unlock after completing all three survival levels. This can be done on any difficulty. You will not get your upgraded equipment for survival mode, but it's really not too tough on easy. There are 10 waves you need to survive and level 1 and 3 have additional requirements.

05.jpg  Survival of the Fittest (S)

Complete a Survival mode arena without losing a life

As the trophy says, complete any of the Survival Mode arenas without losing a life. This can be done on any difficulty. I'd recommend the first level, but do whichever you feel comfortable with. It's not too tough on easy, just try to keep constantly moving and take out the larger vehicles as quickly as possible since they usually spam the most bullets at you.

Spoiler

I was able to get this on the first level. There's only a couple waves with a lot of tanks so if you can get past those you should be ok. There's a lot of health drops throughout to keep you in the green part of the health bar. Remember, you only need to save one tower to pass this level so just choose one early and ignore the other. Then all the carts will funnel into one place and you don't have to run back and forth.

06.jpg  Iron Man (B)

Learn how to operate your walker and complete Bootcamp

Story Related, cannot be missed.

Spoiler

This will unlock after completing the first area of the Prologue level in campaign mode.

07.jpg  Second in Command (B)

Defeat General Brutus by destroying The Excavator

Story Related, cannot be missed.

Spoiler

This will unlock after completing the final area(The Excavator) of chapter 2(Frostbite Pass) in campaign mode.

08.jpg  You Never Walk Alone (B)

Complete an area in co-op

This can be done on any area of any chapter. It can either be done by yourself with two controllers or you can find a partner in the boosting thread

Two Controller Method:

I'd suggest doing the Bootcamp section of the Prologue chapter on easy difficulty. You will need to move both players to advance the camera. My strategy was to move both till enemies appeared then just leave the second player at the bottom of the screen and kill all the enemies like normal. Don't forget the second player has a spark bomb if things get bad. On easy, you should have no trouble finishing the area.

OmegaDenmad said:
For "You Never Walk Alone" I fought the second boss (The Gardener). On easy and with all upgrades, it's a few minutes of spamming missiles and grenades without needing to move too much.

09.jpg  Take it to the Max (B)

Fully upgrade your walker

The walker can be upgraded at any Pirate Shop. These are located at the beginning of each area. You will need a total of 68 bundles of gold to fully upgrade your walker. There are three bundles in each area, except for the final area of each chapter which only has 1 bundle. Most are in plain sight, but I made a gold bundle guide if you're having trouble finding any. Remember you do not need to collect all gold bundles to fully upgrade your walker. There are 78 total and you only need 68.

Gold Locations Guide

10.jpg  Green Peace (B)

Don't push over any trees in Tresspassers

Tresspassers is the first area of chapter 1(Elysium Fields). Some of the trees on this level will fall over if you walk into them. For this trophy you will need to make sure not to move over any trees. Shooting trees with rockets, grenades, etc. will not cause them to fall over, so no need to worry about that. If you do knock over a tree, just select Restart from the menu.

11.jpg  Thunder Struck (B)

Destroy all lightning harvesters in Fog of War

Fog of War is the first area of chapter 3(Thunder Valley). See the trophy image to find out what a harvester looks like. For this trophy you will need to destroy each one in the Fog of War area. There are a total of 8. See spoiler for text locations. I also made a video of the locations if you prefer that format. The first harvester is around 1:30.

Spoiler

1. About halfway through the area, you'll see it to the left of the road and Max will comment on how the empire finished their power stations.

2. Just past 1, it's off to the right of the road. Use bombs to destroy it because you can't reach it from the road.

3&4. Just north of 2, there are two harvesters to the left of the road

5. After crossing the long bridge moving east and passing through the large minefield, the harvester is on the north side of the road.

6. Farther on, after fighting the large helicopter while crossing the bridge moving west, there's a harvester off the road to the north. Use bombs to destroy it.

7. Not far past 6, you will be moving north across a long bridge. There is a harvester off to the right of this bridge.

8. Continue following the road until you move up a hill into a walled area. There is a harvester in this area opposite the two trains that attack you.

12.jpg  Mine! Mine! Mine! (B)

Don't take any damage from sea mines in Tide of Battle

Tide of Battle is the second area of Chapter 4(The Drylands). You'll see the first mines a little way into the level when one of the characters comments on how the Empire has drained the oceans. Just avoid taking damage from these mines for the entire area and the trophy will unlock. The easiest way is to shoot them before you get close and then wait for them to explode. Just take it slow and make sure not to get too close when they explode. Only the round spiked mines (like in the trophy image) count for this. Anything else that explodes will not affect the trophy.

Gold Bar Collectible Guide

(May Contain Spoilers)

*Note: Since the camera angle never changes, I'll be using directions to simplify things. North will always be up on your screen and south is always down on your screen. West will be the left side of your screen and East will be the right side.

This will never change:

N

W <-----> E

S

Prologue:

Bootcamp:

  1. All three are on the main road after completing the shooting range

The Ramparts:

  1. After playing for a while, when you're walking north, the road will turn left then right again. The gold is between the two turns on the south side of the road near a smoking hole in the road.
  2. While walking north, it's on the right side of the road just before the three blue silos where it says 02 on the ground
  3. While walking north, you'll cross a bridge. The gold is on the left as you reach the far side of the bridge. It's near two green boxes and a 01 on the ground.

  2. After going a ways, you'll be moving west when you come to a bridge that crosses a river. There are four hay bales on the south side of the road. The gold is hidden in the south eastern one.
  3. Shortly after #2, you'll cross a bridge going north with waterfalls on both sides. The gold is a short way past there between two turrets that will pop out of the ground.

  3. This one is kind of hard to see. While moving north through the trees, you'll come to a large battle. Just past this area you'll see several enemy troops walking away from you. The gold is under a tree to the left of the narrow trail where the mines are. It's to the west of the first mine if you're having trouble finding it.

Cut Down:

  1. Near the start of the level, on the west side of the map by the first trench you come across.
  2. After passing under a railroad bridge, you'll come to an open area where a train is attacking you from the left. The gold is near this train.

  2. Just after battling the helicopter, you'll find the gold hidden inside a crate, next to the blue silo.
  3. Further on, you'll come to a large battle where two of the rectangular black tanks and two of the rammer vehicles come out all at the same time. Just past here you'll see a mountain on the right and a blue silo on the left. The gold is hidden inside the blue silo.

On the Edge:

  1. After fighting four tanks and a bunch of troops, you'll see the gold on the left next to a blue building.
  2. While moving east, you'll go down a hill and the road turns north. The gold is next to a blue building and two blue silos on the right side.
  3. Further on you'll move up a hill and the road will pass a crane on the right and then go under a railroad track. The gold is on the right just past the tracks.

The Steelworks:

  1. Once you enter the steelworks move to the right and you'll see several blue crates. The gold is hidden in the second group of crates from the entrance.
  2. After passing through the section with flame jets, you'll see the gold at the north end of the walkway in plain sight.
  3. Farther on, you'll be walking north with several rows of glass tubes on each side. After you pass the crane on the left, the gold is to the left in a group of tubes. It's 1 spot to the left and 1 spot up from the bottom right corner of the group.

The Excavator:

  1. Just past the second bridge when coming from the Pirate Shop. Impossible to miss.

very good guide.

I got the "Cant touch this" trophy last night without any guides.

Didnt think there was anyone out there going for it.

Did Chapter 5 , Level 1 (Terminal) a couple of times and after 2 hours finally made it thru without a scartch.

I usually waited after each round until my rockets filled up (6 max) and carried on.

Altho level 2 seems shorter than any other levels on chapter 5...Terminal is the easiest.

Now onto Veteran...dreading this one lol

The last boss is really easy once you understand the patterns.

the first part with the legs is the easiest, you need to pass this part with no health lost to deal with the difficult third section. It's all pretty manageable I think until the tanks that knock your weapons come out. But by then, the boss' health is pretty much down to zero so it's not too bad. The key is skillful dodging and killing the boss asap, swatting the missiles out of the air and killing enemies is not the priority since the legs are almost dead.

the second part is quite easy as well. you'll notice the shots that come from the left and right turrets fan out to the sides, making dodging bullets and boulders very difficult in those corner areas. the key is staying in the middle to since you only have to dodge the rocks. you'll see a pattern and after a few tries you'll be able to dodge the rocks with no health lost. Rockets seem to do more damage than other attacks, and he should be dead by the time he starts shooting water (or steam?) at you. This is the easiest and fastest part of the boss battle.

the third part with the turret is a pain in the ass. the boss itself is really easy, but the immobilizing tanks make navigating the level impossible. save your rockets to kill the tanks ASAP, they seem to come in intervals of two. i would save your spark bomb for this phase, although it only takes off about 1/3 of his health, so it's more for crowd control. this will be the hardest leg of the boss battle, aim to get here with full health intact and with your spark bomb to give you breathing room.

once you see the pattern this boss is cake. let me know if anything's unclear

It's quite clear thanks. It's true these immobilizing tanks are really annoying, without them, the third part would be much easier.

As i don't really care for my score, i used the spark bomb during this phase.

It took several tries, but i finally did it.

Now the worst part: julius's nature with it's load of heavily armored tanks and walkers (i hate these walkers)

very good guide.

Veteran is not hard really, at least I didn't think, but I am a huge bullet storm kinda of gamer. Hope the do GG2 or some really good DLC.

I DID IT!

:chair: Take that Julius's Nature! Phew. In the end I actually made it through without dying. Never thought I'd beat that level on Hard.

just finished area 4 on level 5 on hard... what a rush!

Agreed. I jumped up off my couch lol

The last boss is really easy once you understand the patterns.

Thanks for the strategy xBino. I'll try this out. The last boss is all I have left for 100%

Now the worst part: julius's nature with it's load of heavily armored tanks and walkers (i hate these walkers)

Stick with it and just keep practicing on Julius's. I had to take several breaks throughout my attempts cause it can be quite frustrating, but I kept getting farther and farther and finally today made it :D. When you get to the final area, try not to rush into the center. Then you can bomb the the immobolizer and shield tank in the middle without the 4 towers and 4 rectangle shaped tanks firing back. Then try and continue to stay back while you kill troops and some walkers. Eventually one will drop a grenade booster. Lob one at the towers/tanks on the left and the other at the ones on the right. Then spark bomb the two giant tanks when they come in at the end. That's what I did anyway. Still really hard, but feels good when you get it.

Yes, i noticed the strategy that consists in bombing the ennemies that are almost "off screen" before they can even fire back can be used a lot. You can even destroy one of these giant tanks this way.

I first couldn't get through this level in medium difficulty but now i can finish it easily and i went to the second horizontal phase (when 2 giant tanks chase you) in hard (then, one of the walker killed me... that's why i hate them). I'll keep on practicing an i'll get it.

Oh boy...knew it :(

I tried the prolog on Hard (first level) LOL!...couldnt even finish it.

Whats the secret\strategy to playing this game on hard?

Do you have to know ALL the level\enemy postions by heart?

I tried Julius Nature first (wanted to get that out the way)....got to the scrolling right section where you have a line of soldiers waiting to fire at you and 2 HUGE tanks behind you...

for those of you just starting to playing the game, you'll need to experiement with what weapons you upgrade - this can be critical based on the level at hand.

when i first started playing, i found a fully upgarded grenade was essential to dealing with armor quickly. i then fully maxed my machine guns so i could make quick work with really annoying troops and air support, since these bullets/bombs littered the screen with bullets.

i found the rockets less useful until much later in the game, as i generally preferred to hit armor really hard with a maxed grenade, then finish off with a quick strafe of max machine guns.

armor was the last thing i upgraded. an overwhelming show of force has often been the best defense :)

in regards to tackling this game on hard, there's not really an easy answer. memorizing enemy positions definately helps, but you have to get really solid at dodging a screen full of bullets to last. prioritize your targets. taking out the right targets at the right time is key to surviving.

Can't touch this is a gold trophy, but i think it is much easier than the veteran trophy ("only" silver). The first level of the fifth chapter is quite short and there are not many dangerous enemies. You can get it quickly with some practice in easy mode. In hard, you have to make your way through some "hot" levels. The bosses fight, in particular, are not so easy and julius's nature is probably the hardest one.

Knowing where and when the enemies come from is very helpful, as well as some other things: for example, destroying an enemy can trigger appearance of another one. It's what happens in chapter 5.4: destruction of a shield tank triggers the appearance of a giant tank; if you destroy the two shield tanks that are in the area, you are between two giant tanks and you have to avoid lots of bullets. But killing one shield tank, destroying the first giant tank, then killing the second shield tank and the second giant tank is far more easy.

All these things put together make the level easier (but it's still tricky)

For me, the key was practice. You'll continue to get better at drawing fire where you want it and dodging the bullets. But Hard is just plain hard if you're not experienced in this type of game.

For the non boss levels, I'd suggest going slow and shooting at enemies while they're at the edge of the screen. You can often kill enemies without them firing back. It's basically the same method I suggest for Can't Touch This in the guide. Won't work for the whole level, but you can get through a lot of places like that.

For bosses just keep practicing till you know the patterns. What I did was put it on easy and then kept doing each phase without really firing at the boss. Once you can get through a phase without taking much damage, then repeat the process for the other two phases. Doing it on easy just gives you more room for error and more time to practice without dying. Once you know all three phases, then you can take the boss down in Hard.

Just stick with it really the best advice I can offer. It can be a pretty tough little game in spots, but in the end it feels great when you beat it.

Okay guys I dare anyone in here to get the "Cant Touch That" trophy on Julius Nature level. Hehe its possible in theory but itd probably take 1 billion years to get enought pratice.

I think one of the best psn store games...challenge-wise and enjoyment-wise

I agree, if we ever get a dificulty rating thread Ill give this a 9. Hard mode isnt easy at all and Julius nature isnt for the faint of hearth. Also Cant Touch That can be anoying.

Couple of questions.. Is difficulty higher in coop ? And for can't touch that if you play online coop and have 1 player go first and sponge all the bullets while destroying everything, while second player hangs back and just dodging the remaining bullets will that work for trophy ? I finished story on easy solo.. My buddy is getting the game today and was just wondering if I could make my life a little easier with my last 2 trophies..

Not sure about this but if this gets a difficulty rating - it could be the highest any psn store game has gotten. (cant think of any other hard psn games out there - non-retail)

Not sure about the difficulty. I just used two controllers for the co-op trophy and didn't notice any extra enemies or anything, but I just did the first area of the prologue, so later levels might be different.

For Can't Touch This, I'm honestly not sure. Let me know what you find out and I'll add it to the guide and give you credit if that works.

For Veteran, I think it may actually be more difficult in co-op because you both have to survive the level. If either person dies the level ends.

From what I have played, coop is no harder than SP, actually it is much easier to traverse the game in coop. If you friend has an experience with bullet hell/manic games, you will breeze through all the levels up to 5.4

For the "Can't Touch This" trophy, use level 5.1 and nudge up every so slowly and you can take out 90% of the enemies before they see you (they will barely be on the screen). When you get to the end of the level, you both should still have your stark bombs, use two of them on the two waves that come out and then just finish the one last tank. Easy really.

Good luck.
