Archylte Steppe - Chocobos

I have all of the waystones activated, even the green ones and the yellow one, but I can't figure out how to get a chocobo to complete my map exploration.
I've went by everyone at the Nomad Camp, but there was only one hunter available to talk to at the East entrance, but he only comments about the storm and such. I've also walked by all the chocobos, but there's no prompt next to them.

Has anyone figured this out yet?

I don't think you can ride them until you do a certain side quest, but I totally forgot which quest it is..shouldn't take long though. Just do the hunter quests until you can ride them, and you may have to exit to the world map and reenter to get new quests from the hunters.
