You're items will remain safe MOST of the time, i tend to use the main locker as soon as you enter to store all my items

But i have heard of some many RARE incidents in which story characters enter your house and TAKE some of you're equipment, this is totally RANDOM and very RARE so don't worry about it too much...this has never happened to me on my time playing i have heard of it occurring

I think story characters will only take things from your house if they come in with you. If you notice someone is in your house just reload your autosave and you should be fine.

Or give 'em a shotgun shell to the face. That prevents thievery as well :P
