How did this game win GOTY?

Seriously, after the first day of playing it I already want to return it to gamestop for my money back. Why do average games like this get hyped up so much?

Because The Elder Scrolls has ALOT of fans, I like it alot - probably prefer Oblivion but if you dont like it go return/trade it.

Well everyone has their own taste of what games they like and hate. While many think this is the greatest game in the world, there is bound to also be a lot of people who will highly disagree. Plus everyone has their own idea on what the GotY award should go to.

It's all opinion. Nothing more. Nothing less. Even though it just meant that the opinions of the people who helped make this game to be a GotY just basically outweighed all of the other eligible titles and also games that didn't even have a chance.

I'm not trying to start a flame war, if I wanted that I would have titled the thread Dark Souls pwned Bethedsa's face off. I'm trying to find some silver lining in what appeared to be a massively disappointing pickup.

There's alot of hype for a reason, People love this game because the amount of content is astonishing, the graphics are beautiful etc. etc.

The only flaw is the bugs... Which, to be honest is expected from EVERY Bethesda game.... If you haven't figured that out by now... well...

Good graphics aren't a reason why a game is good. If you can't even come up with one good reason, I guess that says more about the game than I ever could.

I enjoy the open world/world its set in and the way you can pretty much go and make your own story - questlines, guilds etc

It's all down to personal preference. If a game is visually stunning it appeals to me more than a game with terrible graphics could.

It's the same reason with anything. For example, I prefer Battlefield 3 over Modern Warfare 3 for it's Graphic and Sound qualities. Everything looks more beautiful and the sound of the bullets flying through the air is fantastic and realistic.

I know the BF3/MW3 example is off subject but it proves my point of personal preference.

Same with the story, Skyrim has a great story because there is so much content to discover and quests to complete.

In no way am I saying, YOU'RE WRONG AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!!!

I'm just saying if you don't like it that's your opinion, but you need to respect the fact that this game has so many fans because of the above mentioned reasons and that leads to record sales, Hence GOTY.

You need to give valid reasons why you don't think this game deserves GOTY or why you think it is bad, I will respect your opinion like I do with every other on this site, you just need to post it.

Because it's a huge open world with tons of places to go and things to do. Because there is plenty of interaction with people. Because graphically in some cases is great (others it is just crap, but fans tend to forgive it).

To me it is a matter of rewarding quantity toward quality, though. To fight with blades in 1st person view is a PC nonsense and the 3rd person view is just retarded. Unusable. The weapons are many but at the end they just feel all the same. Also for the previous reason. Bethesda should learn from Dark Souls how the fighting must be done.

As an (action) RPG it developed its own Bethesda way. The only feeling I've got is that i get stronger. Sure there are the perks, but they feel more like Bioshock abilities than a real TPG building character. At least this is my opinion.

Still, it would be well worth to win many GOTY. If only for the effort Bethesda put in the game. If it wasn't for the bugs. And I am not talking about the performances bugs and graphics glitches (still..). There are far too many, so many that the wikia site for each entry has a bug section. And they can be game breaking where the only solution is to start a new character. I'd say that the reviewers should develop a common protocol where any game that isn't nearly perfect in terms of execution must be automatically excluded from the GOTY awards.Bethesda games from that point of view are just a disgrace.

I wouldn't say perfect but nearly perfect yes. The worst glitches are the ones about overpowering the characters (where in Skyrim they are the norm). Mostly annoying for the online (feature Skyrim is missing).

If From Software decides to go the Bethesda way in terms of open world and quests with a second new IP, it will eat Bethesda at breakfast.
