Could it be a taunting sort of joke for the self-explanatory reason of a chest? As in items you store there don't disappear aka get deleted?

Haha, well here's exactly what I did: I pickpocketed the key off Adrianne Avenicci in Whiterun, went into her house and awoke her slumbering husband, and it was in his Misc. section. I got more than I bargained for!
