Default This looks good....

Alright, so I am a very picky gamer. I like shooters mainly, but sometimes I like adventure games. This caught my on the Yogscast, so I decided to look it up on IGN. Turns out I like the look of it, it's the type of game I've been looking for. I love the free feeling of it, you can buy a house, roam around and choose a faction. The only thing I am unsure of is the "magicy" side of it. Normal quests and stuff like that are cool, but bring elves and pixies into it and I'm gone. I don't want a WOW game. Should I get it? I really like the look of it, but is there anyone who can give me some info that I should know before deciding?

checkout this thread for a quick discussion on difficulty:
New to TES > Could use some help / advice

you'll see that magic isn't necessary at lower difficulties. I've played a decent amount of RPG, but I never got the hang of playing casters either.. and I'm doing just fine in Skyrim. you should do well playing melee only, if you don't mind doing some tinkering with skills & gear.

since you said you're picky with games, I would suggest renting the game from the local video store, or Gamefly type service. give it a try over 1-3 days for a mere $5 or so, and see if you actually enjoy it.

If you don't like elves/pixies/fantasy then you probably wouldn't like the basis of the game, though if you do want a game that you can spend hundreds of hours exploring and having fun (you can play how you want, so sneaky if you want etc) its worth it, you just need to get past the elves/pixies .

Its more demons and bandits then elvish things really. They have them, but not in the fruity lord of the rings "may we discuss this first?" sense... I like this one because having an axe in one hand, and fireballs in the other is pretty sweet. Btw, I'm on right here right now because a large giant just killed me in one swipe, sending me flying like a golf ball... so its smoke time...

Ah thats ok then, I'm sure anyone could enjoy Skyrim as it just offers loads to do, I still haven't started the main quest (apart from the intro of course and I've probably played about 10 hours or so), I love walking to random missions (who needs quick travel? ).

Ha I tried taking on a giant with a sneak attack, damage was next to nothing so I decided to run for it, the giant literally chased me for 10 minutes so I hopped down a small mountain .

I too learned the hard way that level 5 characters should under no circumstances attack a giant. Level 13 now and I'm still avoiding them lol

Honestly, only the High Elves are really the typical elves. Pretty much made for pure-magic. The other two elves do have skill in magic, but also are geared to other aspects, usually stealth. Wood Elves make good archers, Dark Elves good assassins.

And in Elder Scrolls Orcs are actually technically Elves, just corrupted like their God. They make good barbarians and smiths, while generally not being excellent in magic. However, thanks to the new mechanics and attributes system in Skyrim, Orcs can be mages, too. Unfortunately, however, they no longer have their innate resistance to magic.

And honestly, the magic in this game feels much better than other games I've played. And I enjoy seeing myself run after prey, fire in one hand and frost in the other, shooting a continual stream of death until they finally succumb.
