Default Cheap Lord of the Rings knock-off

Seriously, dwarves, elves and humans versus the darkspawn.

Ring a bell anyone?

I'm enjoying the interactions between party members and some of the side quests, but the main story absolutely stinks of Lord of the Rings, only thing that is missing is the actual ring itself.

You must be pretty young. You apparently missed out on the entire history of the fantasy genre.

This.

Elves, dwarves, humans, ring a bell? Warcraft.

Elves, dwarves, humans, ring a bell? Most fantasy games, books, movies, etc.

I don't really see much comparison to LOTR and DA:O other than the fact that there are elves, dwarves, and humans in both. The stories aren't even close to being the same, sure they may have some minor similarities, but then again if you look at the fantasy genre as a whole, most fantasy stories do share similar traits.

That would be fine if it were just dwarves, elves and humans. But the fact all of them unite against the darkspawn, much like the Orcs in Lord of the Rings. They even look so similar. Then going into the deep trenches, I felt like I was watching Lord of the Rings with that opening scene in the deep trenches.

There are similarities, but that's just the fantasy genre, which Tolkien didn't invent. You can trace a lot of those same elements back to the old epics of Gilgamesh and Beowolf. In fact, the whole recruit a party to take down an evil owes a lot to films like Seven Samuri and Magnificent Seven.

This would be the same thing as looking at any Sci-Fi / Space game and saying "Oh, that's just a Star Wars ripoff".

Obviously films, literature and games owe a lot to what came before them, but you can't just look at common genre and literary elements and call it a knock off.

having studied the LOTR movies and the DA games with a team of Harvard Scientists, I have concluded that Dragon Age is not a knock off of the LOTR movies/books. In LOTR, the Humans and Elves were allied during the assault on Mordor in an attempt to free Middle Earth from Sauron (no dwarves, as Lord Elrond says "They stay in their mines seeking riches, they care nothing for the plight of others!") In DA:O, you painstakingly recruit dwarves, elves and humans under one banner to fight a monstrous enemy threatening the world. In LoTR, most of the elves leave ME and the few that willingly ally with the humans are pretty much wiped out at helms deep the moment they get there (only legolas? thanks for nothing Mirkwood!)

Now you could have made the arguement that much like LoTR, the darkspawn are changed humans/elves/dwarves into monstrous beasts as the orcs were once elves. You could have made the arguement that the Uruk-Hai are very "hurlockish" while the orcs are very "genlockish." There are many things you could have hit upon.

In the end, at least we all get a laugh out of this because as many have already stated, just because LoTR was here before DA:O, it doesn't mean that everything is based completely off of those works (I find that many current fantasy games borrowed from the fantasy novels of old as well as D&D).

And if your offended by this in any way, then I'm terribly sorry that you take this post so seriously.

Studied this at Harvard with scientists? I'd sure love to know what course that was. And these "scientists" weren't professors? I agree with your statements, but find the intro a bit...unnecessary?

Wow, thinking like this, I've just realised that Battlefield and Call of duty are copies of medal of honour.

Soldiers with guns vs bad guys

Seriously, I'd also like to know what class that was for and if I can sign up for it!
