Having trouble on the plot encounter "The Long Road"

On the way to the Village of Haven, I get ambushed by travelers (bandits) and I'm being attacked by their leader, Zevran. There are too many bandits and they don't give me a chance to fight back when they drop some explosions on me. I am trying to fight off one another using spells and ranged attack magic powers while I look for Zevran and I have no time to recover. They killed my party with one blow. and even that is not enough, they kill my PC's (playable characters) even when I tried to quickly press L1/R1 to change characters, that character I turned into is now dead and there is one left standing for me hoping that I have a chance to run and dodge their attacks and keep at a safe distance to shoot at close range but they have magic powers of their own and throw their projectiles at me. What strategy do I have? everytime I go back to this part of the game, it's like the end for me because I can't get through. Even the Prima Official Game Guide that I have doesn't help me either

Although this is lame, have you tried to switch the difficulty to easy?
