Introduction:

This game is based off the Discovery Channel’s Emmy-winning TV series Deadliest Catch and challenges players to take on one of the world’s toughest and most dangerous jobs, crab fishing. Deadliest Catch: Sea of Chaos combines strategy and action as players chart a course through the unforgiving Bering Sea on a quest to catch Opilio Crab and King Crab. This is a PS Move compatible game although the Move Controller is NOT required to play.

Roadmap Walkthrough:

Go to Select Campaign > Tutorial:

Tutorial will be the only area unlocked as you start the campaigns. Complete the tutorial section (you’ll practice setting, retrieving, sorting, etc) and receive your first trophy Capable.

Mini-game Skill Trophies:

The skill trophies (Set, Retrieve, Sort, Offload), All Set, Captain Hook, Fast Hand, and Steady Hand, can be earned in any campaign by completing mini-games.

Once you start fishing, try for All Set by attempting to set a 50 pot string without making a mistake (missing a drop location marker), receiving a grade of ‘A’ as a result. You must select 50 pots (for this trophy) and anticipate each area so that the pots are delivered within the ring displayed. Steering correctly, by regular use of the “center rudder” (:circle: button), helps greatly. The Set mini-game does have time considerations. Try to set all pot strings by considering distance and estimated crab. Once your pots are dropped, offload, check the crew and ship, and let the crew rest while the pots “soak”. Give them time to build up crab (24 hrs+) before retrieving them.

When retrieving, another trophy can be earned: Captain Hook . You’ll get this one by achieving a 20 streak in Retrieving mode (hook throw mini-game). This is based on the streak number (lower left corner) and not the number of pots collected. Retrieving a ‘5’ means ONLY your first on the streak meter but 5 less pots to get. Understand that you want to quickly get the lower numbered strings for more opportunities for a streak. Do it without missing (an error) or picking off a competitor’s pot. Keep your streak up by not going too slow and by attempting smaller numbered pots, closer to the boat. Control the speed by slowing down to retrieve and speeding up to the next pot. Try to select a crew member with high Retrieve.

Next involves sorting and the trophy, Fast Hand. You need a streak of 16 correct crabs without making a mistake or letting the streak meter deplete. Grabbing and throwing the same types of either good or rejected crab/fish without changing toss direction is the only way. If you switch back and forth the streak meter resets. You do not need to achieve a grade of ‘A’ for the trophy.

The offloading trophy, Steady Hand, requires offloading at least 50 crab and getting an 'A' (no errors). Errors happen when you hit the crane but NOT when you simply miss upkeep on the streak meter. Take your time and miss that crane but pitch them out rapidly when you get a clear shot. You DO NOT need a 50 streak but simply must toss more than 50 crabs and get an ‘A’. Time is a slight factor here!

Random Opportunity Trophies:

Along the way you should be aware of earning random opportunity trophies. Lifesaver can only be earned after receiving a random radio distress call and then successfully completing a mini-game of throwing a lifesaving ring.

The Fearless trophy will only occur by watching for the navigation map to indicate a hurricane at a fishing location. Hurricane weather shows clearly with a hurricane funnel image and as location text information. Go there during the hurricane and retrieve and sort for the trophy. If you have trouble getting this, try to play Tournament > Stormy Seas to ensure the weather is particularly bad.

Go to Tournament:

Here you can complete locally against another player to earn Competitor. You do not have to win for the trophy. Alternate turns until the game time has been completed or speed through to the end by repeatedly using Cabin > Rest > 48 Hours.

Any of the skill trophies listed can ALSO be earned in Tournament Mode. Here you do not have to worry about competing and can use your fishing time to get trophies for repairing your boat, and searching for hurricanes. Trophies are even earned when they are achieved by the second player.

To select boat and mode, be sure to pick the worst reliability boat and Bonanza mode. Follow this up by selecting either Nick or Matthew and a full high stamina crew. Nick or Matthew will help earn, Master Engineer and the other high skill crewmembers make getting ‘A’ grades on skill related trophies easier. Make sure to NOT repair the unreliable boat in port. Eventually you’ll have to repeatedly patch broken equipment (crane, engine, winch) while at sea.

Since you have chosen Nick or Matthew (they start with level 4 Patch) you can rank them up to the required 5 Patch by perfecting a few Patch mini-games. Once you get to 5, you will get the 8 bonus star mini-game panel necessary for the trophy. The trophy unlocks when you have covered the 8 bonus stars that now appear. Make sure you get Nick or Matthew ranked fastest by attempting to get all the stars each time in the mini-game. The better the grade, the faster they rank up. Once you have the trophies desired, advance to the end of the season.

Go to Select Campaign > Capt. Greenhorn:.

Now you’ve unlocked Capt. Greenhorn by completing the tutorial. Once you have reached the monetary goal of $300,000 or more (deducted expenses, outside crew fees, do not matter) then you can advance this 8 day season to the end by Cabin > Rest. This earns you Greenhorn.

Now we’ll finish the other campaigns, in order, as follows: Duel, Season 4 (finish atop of 2 seasons), Bonanza (Earn over $1,500,000), Full Career (Earn over $1,500,000 in last of 6 seasons), Slim Pickings (Get the most during low count season), Stormy Seas (Earn $1,300,000 in rough seas), and Underdog (Come out on top with an old worn boat). Pay attention to what must be accomplished in each campaign and use mentioned strategies. To reach any monetary goal, do not worry about what the competition does. If goal is to win, then save often and check progress remains on top on the in-game leaderboard found at Cabin > Standings. One individual campaign game save exists within each campaign that you have started. Remember you can quit and reset, if needed. Some campaigns unlock after completing a certain number of the others but the campaigns can be done in any order.

Go to Select Campaign > Duel:

The trophy Soloist, can be completed in Duel (1 vs. 1) by ONLY hiring ONE deckhand. This deckhand should be Monte OR Edgar. I used Edgar and easily made around three times as much as Sig by utilizing high crab count areas two at a time repeatedly. Buying a fast boat can help with fast trips and remember to save and advance the clock once you have a clear victory (Cabin > Rest).

Go to Select Campaign > Season 4:

This campaign must be won for the trophy for beating all campaigns. There are two seasons here (King Crab and Opilio). Completion requires only a lead at the end of the second season. Select a smaller faster boat and pick a high stamina crew size of only 4. Soak pots while offloading and remember to avoid losing time by repairing your boat while in port by going to Repair Boat. Remember that you can save, and advance the game clock once you have a clear victory (Cabin > Rest).

Go to Select Campaign > Bonanza:

This campaign is requires earning more than $1,500,000. Bonanza gives a lot of crab at each location and larger ships to collect it. Remember to get a good boat and a deduction for expenses (other than crew percentage cuts) does not affect earned money total. Use good strategy and a high stamina crew. Once you have $1,500,000 you can advance the game clock to the end of the season (Cabin > Rest) to win. You will also get the trophy, Crab Tycoon, because you will have earned more than $1,000,000.

During Bonanza, you can achieve an average of 80 King Crab per pot (or higher) earning King Crab Jackpot. Fish only areas with a high crab count (full meter), after a medium soak (around 24 hours). Keep in mind that area counts are estimated until fished and you can extend to a 48 hour soak if not easily getting the trophy.

Go to Select Campaign > Full Career:

When you finish the Full Career you unlock the trophy, Veteran. Remember to save prior to the last (sixth) season and make over $1,500,000 for the trophy.

Go to Select Campaign > Slim Pickings:

Slim Pickings only requires that you beat out the other captains. Regular checking of Cabin > Standings will show rankings. The key is to continue to fish the areas with the high crab count and then move on when crab count drops. A faster boat is not required here and soaking times should be middle of the road (like around 24 hours). Offload when necessary and don’t forget to rest the crew. Dropping test pots (at first) will reveal the best areas and, the larger the question mark spot markers, the more crab generally to catch. Don’t forget to save after each confirmation of the lead. Anticipate the end of the season too so that you have time to make port for one last unload.

Go to Select Campaign > Stormy Seas:

This campaign will put heavy strain on your crew stamina and boat condition. Many of the tactics will remain the same EXCEPT you should repair the boat (in port) and rest your crew more often to avoid lengthy delays of repair and recovery. Earning the $1,300,000 requirement is simple and when reached you can advance the clock with Cabin > Rest.

Go to Select Campaign > Underdog:

The Underdog trophy comes from beating the Underdog campaign which is unlocked after completing the tutorial and 4 other campaigns. Once you have beaten all campaigns you will also receive the final trophy, Old Salt.

Additional Strategy:

When steering the boat to Set, try to reset the rudder to neutral whenever possible to avoid uncontrollable turns. The rudder is reset to neutral by pushing the :circle: button. Always set back all the pots BEFORE offloading. A generally acceptable time for Setting is 3 to 5 hours.

When retrieving pots make sure to keep a steady speed (mainly stay at 80%) so that you make the next pot before the streak meter runs out. Remember to try for the lower numbered pots closer to the boat and slow down if you need to adjust aim. A generally acceptable time for Retrieving is 3 to 5 hours.

When on the sorting table be sure to continually push the right controller stick diagonally and slightly angled (or aim the Move Controller) toward the chute. If you learn to throw in the correct manner, crab can be tossed all the way across the sorting table and into the proper chute. Improperly thrown crab will hit the rails of the table and stop. The key is to keep a steady pace and make certain to pick up the appropriate crab/fish before throwing. Remember not to change directions until you have used up all of the same type (keep or reject) being thrown. Changing sides resets the streak meter! A generally acceptable time Sorting is 2 to 4 hours.

When offloading the boat, pick the port to unload based on the price listed per crab. Selling at a cheaper rate only cuts your profits short. During the mini-game, be sure to avoid hitting the crane OR taking too much time. Offloading can be very time consuming and learning to do it quickly will significantly lengthen the time you have for catching more crab. Ignore the ghost image of the toss arc and concentrate on where the crab actually is going. Lead in front of the brailer and do not be afraid to toss crab (away from the crane) to help visualize the true throwing arc. The amount of crab thrown that misses the brailer costs nothing but time.

Crew Skill and Stamina effects all mini-game performance. Remember that you increase overall crew skill by performing better at mini-game tasks. When selecting the crew member to use, make sure you select the crewperson that is most skilled in that particular area and watch Stamina levels. The skill of crewmembers goes down when they are not rested (lowered Stamina). Performing your best in a mini-game not only reduces time waste but you get valuable time and money bonuses as well.

Additionally, test pots can be placed and immediately retrieved to give an idea of the crap amount in an area. Find those high crab count areas and don’t waste time on dry areas. Soak time is important and soaking pots while returning to unload at port is good strategy. Remember to avoid soaking pots longer than 48 hours as the crab counts will begin to go down. If there is a ton of crab located there, soak for only around 24 hours.

If you have difficulty with a few of the mini-game trophies, save and repeatedly attempt them by exiting and returning. For example, if you need to complete unloading, save a campaign immediately before heading to port. If you fail in the unloading (and the trophy) quit the game and simply reload the save. This saves time from sailing for more crab before attempting again.

Thank you all very much for enjoying my roadmap and please let me know if you have any recommended improvements or questions.

Trophies:

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgCapable (B)

Finish the Tutorial

Go to Select Campaign > Tutorial and complete the short tutorial section. It is essentially linear and involves setting pots, retrieving pots, sorting crab, navigating, choosing deckhands for specific tasks, and unloading crab into the brailers at port. Your performance grade in each task does not matter to obtaining the trophy.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgGreenhorn (B)

Win the Capt. Greenhorn campaign

This campaign is only unlocked after completion of the tutorial. Go to Select Campaign > Capt. Greenhorn to start this initial season. You’ll start by buying a boat (and customizing it if you choose), hiring a crew, and perhaps topping off your fuel. The trophy requires you to earn more than $300,000 and deducted expenses, outside of crew fees, do not matter to this monetary goal. After buying a boat and hiring a crew, choose locations that show a large estimated amount of crab. No areas will initially be fished, so crab count meters are only estimates at this time. Simply continue to retrieve crab and offload when full. Once you have reached the monetary goal then you can advance this 8 day season to the end by Cabin > Rest.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgUnderdog (B)

Win the Underdog campaign

Win the “Underdog” Campaign found at Select Campaign > Underdog. This is unlocked after completing the tutorial and 4 other campaigns. This campaign involves you using strategy to outperform the “heavy hitters” with your rusty old boat. It is important to fish the high crab areas, soak your pots while unloading, and maximize the crab you pull in with solid performance in the mini-games. Seek out the higher crab areas and use speed to get to them before others. DO NOT share radio information with other boats. A three man crew choice of Mike, Bill, and Travis works best. Remember if you have a clear lead the clock can be advanced by using Cabin > Rest.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/06.jpgCongenial Captain (B)

Make friends with a captain

This trophy is all about using the radio. When you are observing locations you can also radio to other boat captains and share and receive crabbing information. Do this enough times and you will earn a friendship with one of the other captains.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgFearless (B)

Pull up and sort crab in Hurricane weather

To get this trophy you must watch for hurricane weather on the navigation map. A hurricane storm vortex will appear and the crab location details will state details about hurricane weather. Simply travel there before the hurricane leaves and retrieve pots followed by sorting the retrieved crab.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgLifesaver (B)

Rescue a deckhand outside of Practice mode

This trophy comes only after you receive a random radio distress call asking for your help in saving a crewmember in the water. Complete the mini-game by throwing the lifesaving ring onto the stranded crewmember. This challenge starts by setting out toward a series of question marks. Pings are sent out with the :cross: button until you locate the missing person. Sail to spot and hit ping while overtop the location. Once found, throw a lifesaving ring onto the crewmember before the timer runs out. The ring is tossed in a similar fashion to the throwing action while recovering pots.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/10.jpgKing Crab Jackpot (B)

Pull up a string with more than 80 King Crab per pot

This trophy is achieved by fishing any area with a high crab count (approximately an 80% full meter) after an extended soak (as close to a 48 hr. soak as possible helps).

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/12.jpgMaster Engineer (B)

Collect 8 bonuses during the Patch game outside of Practice mode

This trophy is earned from the mini-game that repairs damaged items on the ship (crane, engine, or winch) while you are out at sea. The game involves placing simple connecting wires so that you connect the green (start) and red (finish) connectors on the panel. There will also be areas you cannot cover indicated by pieces of blocking material. For the trophy, you must navigate the panel by putting down the wires and covering at least 8 areas marked by stars. Crew members must be ranked to Patch skill of 5 before the required 8 stars will appear. Performing well in each mini-game increases crewmember's skill faster than with a poor performance.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgSteady Hand (B)

Offload at least 50 crab outside of Practice mode and get an 'A' without making an error

This trophy is completed by the offloading mini-game upon returning to port with a load of crab. Most reasonably full holding tanks will contain the required 50 crabs and you must simply complete the mini-game in a reasonable time WITHOUT hitting the swinging crane (an error) even once.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgFast Hand (B)

Get a streak of 16 in the Sorting game outside of Practice mode

This trophy is completed in any of the campaigns by sorting (mini-game) 16 correct crabs, in a row, without making a mistake OR letting the streak meter deplete. Grabbing and continuously throwing the same types (of either good or junk crab/fish) without changing sides/types is the easiest way to achieve this.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgCaptain Hook (B)

Get a streak of 20 while Retrieving outside of Practice mode

This trophy is completed in any of the campaigns by retrieving a 20 pot streak in a row (hook throwing mini-game) without letting the streak meter deplete.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgAll Set (B)

Set 50 pots outside of Practice mode and get an 'A' without making an error

This trophy is completed in any of the campaigns by setting a 50 pot string without making a mistake (missing any round drop location markers) and receiving a grade of ‘A’ as a result.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgCompetitor (B)

Complete a tournament game

This trophy is earned under Tournament and comes only after the completion of all rounds by every player. Multi-player is local (offline) using only one controller.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgVeteran (S)

Win the Full Career campaign

The Full Career campaign consists of a total of 6 fishing seasons. The campaign is completed, and trophy earned, by making over $1,500,000 in the LAST season. Remember to save prior to the last (sixth) season for shorter replay if necessary. I suggest getting at least a 100 pot size boat that is fast and reliable. The money to buy a better boat can be earned by working the first season (and part of the second) as usual. The choice of boats that works best is one like the Daredevil at a cost of $1,800,000. Different boats are available for sale in each season (randomly) but once you buy a boat you carry it over to following seasons. The clock can be advanced (Cabin > Rest) to quickly finish after acquiring the necessary money. Remember to use mentioned strategy and save along the way. Avoid where others are fishing and hit the known high crab areas repeatedly. The seasons will switch between King Crab and Opilio with the season lengths progressing from 8 days, to 12, to 14, to 10, to 12, to lastly 12 days (Opilio Crab) for the final season.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/01.jpgOld Salt (S)

Win all the campaigns

This trophy requires you to beat all the various campaigns including: Tutorial, Capt. Greenhorn, Duel, Season 4, Bonanza, Full Career, Slim Pickings, Stormy Seas, and Underdog. Refer to the strategy section of the Roadmap for additional ways to improve your performance in these campaigns.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/09.jpgCrab Tycoon (S)

Earn one million dollars in a single season

This trophy is achieved by reaching a money total of more than $1 million from selling your crab catches to the various ports. Expenses (boat repairs, etc), outside of deckhand wage percentages, do NOT count against you for this total.

http://www.ps3trophies.org/images/trophies/440/11.jpgSoloist (S)

Come out on top of a season while hiring only a single crewmember

To get this trophy, win a season with ONLY one crewmember being hired. This is not hiring of one at a time but overall hiring of only one individual deckhand for the entire season.

wow, so that's two retail games in the past few months with no platinum. kung fu riders was the other. wow, so more psn games have been getting plats, while more retails are left with psn size trophy lists... interesting...

Yeah it doesn't have a plat and for me that actually added to the draw of it because they will likely remain obscure trophies that few will get. It could have easily had a plat too because the time and challenge level fits with many Platinum Games. I notice too, by looking at our sister site (xbox), that these games still get 1k gamer achievement points. It is definately confusing how they must decide to allocate trophies and weight.

If xbox gets 1000G on this then couldnt they have made this all gold and 1 platinum on the ps3??

That sounds FAIR!!!

I hear ya. I thought the time warranted it being a platinum but I guess there are a few games that will be fitting into this same non-plat layout yet 1000 G on xbox.

How come on the cover it says only on playstation?

BTW Nice guide, i might just be cheap and get this game to get a step closer to top 5 in 100%/plat clubs.
