From what I've read, back in the unpatched 1.00 version it costs [your soul level] x 2000 Souls to pay for absolution, however that price tag has since been scaled down dramatically.
Currently with patch 1.05, its [your soul level] x 500, which is although still pricy, but much more possible.

Invade areas or do Coop, you can earn alot of souls doing this. I coop with my sl15 character help people on bell gargoyles boss at undead church and I get 5000 souls a pop. This first area, sure it will offer more further in.

Right, as doomgun posted, the price for absolution equals the result of your soul level times 500.

By the way, I didn't know that you can actually "kill" Alvina... All times I've tried to hit her, she just curses me with a bunch of words and disappears... Therefore, I'm quite sure you can't really do her any damage from where she lies... Never tried an arrow or bolt, though.. hahaha, maybe that will work.

About getting the souls needed to "purchase" absolution from Brother Oswald, the real best way is cooping... By helping other players to beat any boss you can fast and easily get a bunch of souls. Depending on your level, you will get the souls you need in no time.

You can't kill her. A user was stating that someone had CONFUSED her vanishing for "killing her", which it wasn't.

The price of absolution is a pittance, and at SL81 there're MANY options to earn 40k souls quickly and effortlessly.
