Stuck in the Church race

I'm stuck in the race to the church. I can never win this because I have no idea how to climb the best way and I can't run and everytime it restarts my brother is much further ahead. And I don't know how to quit it.
What am I supposed to do?

Just hold

and

, then move in the direction you want to go and Ezio will just auto climb everything.
