if by the time you get Knight's Honor Trophy, and you still don't have Platinum, you probably screwed up, not the game screw you up. The only confusing covenant I think would be Kaathe and Nito.

I think for games like Dark Souls there'd be different guides depending on how the author approaches it. I've screened through all the Gamefaqs guides and also have the official book from Future Press (they should have put some lore like a 16-page story piece in there but sadly none was forthcoming).
For me I always like to see how the guide author approaches the game (some say go Darkroot basin first, some tackle duke's archives first, etc etc). I especially love guides where humor / fun are thrown in as well as the easter eggs available.
So it comes back to you on how you wanna approach it. It could be a long guide to capture all the experience. Or It could be a fast plat guide (make some good friends who can pass you all the stuff for the weapons trophy and just blaze through as quickly as possible). And so on and so on.
