As a "True" fan, I CAN say that I don't like the direction that Square-Enix is taking the Final Fantasy franchise - mainstreaming it and dumbing it down and throwing in a whole bunch of aesthetics and acrobatics just so that kids will be mesmerized by it.
At least when Sakaguchi-san was the Executive Producer, he would at least incorporate some sort of overall theme to the game. In VII, it was the fact that we can't let megalomaniacal corporations grow out of control, lest the planet should wither. In VIII it was more of the fact that war would never really solve anything, and to try to cheat time would only delay the inevitable. IX was pretty much the same, but it was kind of more basic - fighting for the preservation of life was pretty much the gist of what I got at the end of it all.
In X, the last great Final Fantasy in my opinion, depicted that those who fanatically and ignorantly follow a religion are doomed to repeat the cycle of death and destruction with very little hope of change. To defy the institution you've been raised to acknowledge as the truth your whole life, and in turn find the real truth on your own, was what made X more memorable to me, at least.
XII was pretty much just a grand adventure, something in the essence of The Legend of Zelda where there really isn't an overall theme, but it was fun and engaging with a memorable cast (I maintain the opinion that Fran should be a Playgirl).
XIII seemed very much an allusion to the average adolescent mindset: The protagonists are forced upon them a fate which they don't desire, and fight to defy it. It's very much like a kid whose had their lives decided for them, and start acting out. There was no grand ideological struggle or really big epiphanies embedded in the game. If anything, it was more of an M. Night film. Couple with the sexual tension between Fang, Vanille and Lightning, and the whininess of Hope being unable to shank Snow for dropping his mom - XIII barely passed for a game.
All I liked about XIII was the return of the ATB gauge and the massive amounts of hentai people drew for the girls afterwards.
I could care less for the excessive amounts of folding weapons (A folding staff for Vanille? Seriously?) or Eidolons transforming into vehicles (I'm looking at you, Odin).
